UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.  Academic Services (AS) within UW-IT develops and provides technologies, learning spaces, classroom support and services that enhance teaching, learning and research at the UW. This division works with UW faculty and departments to use technology to improve learning outcomes and to advance the Universitys academic mission. It collaborates with other UW units and external partners to share and integrate resources and services with a focus on creating efficiencies.

The Student Program within AS, supports UW enterprise student applications for registration, admissions, financial aid and more, including overseeing modernization efforts; develops initiatives focused on delivering high value, shorter-term enhancements including the MyPlan online academic planning tool; represents the UWs involvement in Kuali Student, a next-generation student administrative system being developed by a consortium of top-tier universities.

The Mainframe Developer will provide senior level system development and consultation to support enterprise student applications for registration, admissions, and financial aide systems.  This position will collaborate with client departments to define requirements; design and implement appropriate solutions; identify and solve operational problems relating to: networks, distributed services, mainframe systems, 3rd party applications, and end-user specific tools.  This position effects every student and their student experience within the Universty, UW Bothell and UW Tacoma.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Management or related field or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of four years experience in expert-level programming knowledge and experience with COBOL and mainframe database management systems.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, user liaison skills, customer orientation, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for business and research needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a professional manner in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment, across different application areas and with different client and technical teams.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED:

  • Demonstrated programming knowledge and experience with Java, C#, .NET, XML, SQL.

  • Experience in enterprise-scale administrative systems at a major research university.

  • Experience with ARMS-based financial or ISI-based payroll, benefit and HR systems.

  • Experience with large-scale procurement, payables and receivables systems.

  • Experience with large-scale university student administration systems.

  • Knowledge and experience with WFL, DMS II, CANDE, and COBOL85 in the Unisys MCP mainframe environment.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Work in open office environment.
