Loss Prevention and Fire Safety Engineer

An engineering professional responsible for managing loss prevention and property protection efforts for all Abbott facilities worldwide.  As Project / Principal Engineer you will coordinating insurance audits and property conversation efforts. Key contact for compliance issues and best practices related to fire protection, explosive hazards, life safety and risk management.


- Identifies, estimates, plans and conducts medium- to large-size projects within engineering and quality specialty requiring custom, risk-managed execution plans, investigations and/or equipment. Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines.


- Benchmarks internally and externally. Analyzes business forces (customers, suppliers, competitors, technologies, government regulations) in major markets to identify trends and recommend responses, e.g. recommends a division-wide development program to introduce new technology.
- Independently executes and/or directs others in the execution of: the design of products/processes/
equipment/systems/facilities by applying novel engineering theories, concepts and techniques within the disciplines.
- Designs and leads complex experiments with multiple variables.  Gathers data and performs detailed analysis. Assesses relevance. Communicates across functions and disciplines.


- Explores multiple alternatives. Structures studies and integrates cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues to arrive at optimal course of action, e.g. investigates process to meet increasing regulatory requirements while maintaining manufacturing/construction efficiency.


- Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Where appropriate, provides tasks/project assignment opportunities for employee development and evaluates performance.
- Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
- Exhibits a working knowledge of areas where Abbott participates (i.e. Nutrition, Medical Devices, Diagnostics, Pharmaceutical manufacturing.


- Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas (i.e. FDA) as applicable.
- Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major projects within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.


  • A Bachelor’s or Master of Science degree in Engineering or related field.
  • 12+ years of significant engineering and//or operational experience.
    • Experience with fire protection and suppression systems
    • Experience with building code and fire management (FM) global requirements.
    • Major plus if one has fire service experience and familiarity with fire protection drawings or NICET
    • Must be able to travel up to 50%
