The Lead Psychologist maintains administrative and clinical oversight responsibilities in managing the Medical Student Counseling Services at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. Specific program responsibilities include providing confidential HIPAA compliant clinical counseling services.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Provides oversight, coordination, and management of the Counseling Service to insure appropriate levels of care and service to KPSOM medical students
  • Responsible for implementing and managing a program that will allow students to seek help for fellow students who may have performance issues, and/or mental health, including addiction disorders.
  • Provides individual, couples and/or group psychological counseling and wellness services to KPSOM medical students and their spouses/partners.
  • Provides crisis intervention management services to medical students during regular business hours.
  • Assists students in addressing personal, mental health, academic and professional concerns.
  • Guide students in the preparation for attendance and presentation at Student Academic Standards and Promotion Committee meetings.
  • Refers students to healthcare providers for medication assessment and management, as appropriate.
  • Oversees, plans, coordinates, and initiates wellness services (workshops, seminars, and events) designed to support the mental health and wellness of medical students.
  • Oversees implementation of extra-curricular educational programming for medical students on mental health.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, or administration as needed regarding issues of medical student health, wellness, progress, and/or behavior.
  • Maintains an active network of community providers and psychiatrists willing to offer services to medical students. Oversees consultation on student counseling cases with KP psychiatrist.
  • Liaises with Kaiser Permanente Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which will provide services to KPSOM students.
  • Participates in professional development conferences and training as needed.
  • Participates in School of Medicine committees as requested.
  • Participates in other activities with the Student Affairs Office, including but not limited to: early immersion experience/orientation, class meetings, staff retreats, and faculty and staff development.
  • Collects data and prepares statistical reports on students' utilization of counseling services. Conducts surveys on students' satisfaction with services and implements continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engages in program development, continuous quality improvement, and the enlistment of relevant stakeholder participation in developing strategic planning for future counseling support programming.
  • Prepares periodic reports on utilization and development of the Counseling Service.
  • Develops and maintains a library of self-help and mental health resource material for students.
