LEAD LAUNCH ENGINEER, VEHICLE INTEGRATION

The lead launch engineer will lead a team of mixed discipline launch engineers (mechanical and avionics) to accomplish €˜pre-launch€™ vehicle integration and vehicle refurbishment at our SpaceX Vandenberg launch site. This leader will be responsible for all Falcon 9 work scope, non-conformances, and potential scope changes as Falcon 9 vehicles make it through post-flight maintenance and pre-launch site processing. The role requires that this individual work closely with the technician team, supervisors and the operations manager to enforce a robust vehicle integration process and quality work product.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for executing launch vehicle campaigns to include stage processing, testing, integrated operations, launch support, and post-flight vehicle maintenance/refurbishment.
  • Provide expertise and guidance to the management staff as it relates to final integration of flight hardware at operational launch sites.
  • Interface with a variety of engineering groups to overcome off-nominal conditions and drive effective solutions.
  • Delegate tasks and projects to engineers, and be accountable for achieving results and hitting deadlines; must be able to perform all tasks in order to fill-in when another engineer is not present.
  • Lead and manage performance of the team to ensure milestones and goals are met and job satisfaction is high.
  • Maintain vehicle integration, process improvements, and problem solve to enable rapid and reliable launch operations.
  • Responsible for improving existing processes, equipment, and techniques for attaining launch rates, organization cost reduction and continuous improvements.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor€™s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience as a launch vehicle engineer and/or professional experience leading operations, developing process improvements and training teams.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master€™s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience as launch vehicle engineer in the launch integration/test teams.
  • Prior leadership experience, to include leading teams, projects, or people.
  • Expert level first-principles engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to obtain or currently hold top secret/SCI security clearance.
  • Proactive and forward thinking with respect to team growth and department/company strategy.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment that operates under tight timelines and aggressive schedules.
  • Experience working at a rocket launch facility and supporting launch campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with and convey concepts within all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to manage integration and testing of complex, multidisciplinary assemblies, and systems.
  • Ability to obtain or currently hold top secret/ SCI security clearance.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Vandenberg
  • Work schedule may vary depending on site operational needs, and flexibility is required.
  • Ability to support and supervise operations outside of normal business hours, when required.
  • Flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required.
  • Perform work in an environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Physical effort including standing, lifting, and carrying moderately heavy materials or equipment (up to 35 pounds).
