I. Basic Purpose:

Independently ensures that all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed and tracked in a high quality, timely and safe manner. Properly utilizes computerized instrument tracking system. Additionally serves as preceptor for students and new hires, service lead for three services, super user for key info systems used in the department, provides in services to team, and serves as relief supervisor as delegated.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required.

2. Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers. Cooperates with Management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork and collaboration. Promotes a positive work environment

3. Works with Supervisor to maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards to ensure optimum patient and associate safety per OSHA and departmental standards.

1. Decontamination: identified and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment. Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment. Appropriately handles garbage, linen and biohazardous materials. Maintains safety standards.

2. Preparing Instruments: Consistently uses tray listings to correctly assemble, protect, wrap containerize and/or peel package and label instruments. Identifies and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality. Ensures sterility for patient safety at all times.

3. Storage: properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment and instruments.

4. Sterilization Process: selects appropriate sterilization methods. Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization. Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process. Utilizes on-line databases to ensure instruments, equipment and supplies are handled via manufacturer guidelines, in accordance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency requirements, and patient safety standards.

5. Distribution: Understands surgeon preference cards to ensure completeness of case carts. Disburses and tracks medical and surgical supplies and equipment to the customer in a quality/timely manner

6. Equipment: Understands uses, maintains and operates the equipment specific to sterile processing (steam, gas plasma sterilizers, cart washers; TD 100, washers/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners and heat sealers) as well as a variety of testing devices.

7. Inventory Control: knows and uses the processes involved in ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating delivering and monitoring usage of surgical supplies. Communicates supply issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

8. Environmental Standards: Maintains a clean orderly work area. Completes assigned housekeeping duties.

9. Preceptor: serves as a preceptor for students and new hires within the peri-operative service.

10. Service Lead: serves as a service lead for three services.

11. Super User: Serves as super user for key information systems used within department.

12. Trainer: Serves as a trainer providing inservices within department.

13. Relief Supervisor: serves as relief supervisor as delegated

14. Attends educational programs and meetings as required, and participates on committees as directed.

15. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position as mandated by Martin Health System.

16. Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.

III. Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education):

To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements:
> High school diploma or equivalent.
> Required: 3-5 years healthcare CSS or surgical technology experience.
