Interested in making an environmental impact?  The Laboratory Supervisor position is integral to the proper treatment of industrial wastewaters. Covanta Environmental Solutions (CES) receives contaminated wastewater, removes the impurities, recovers oil and returns the previously tainted water back into the water-cycle.

The Laboratory Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing all onsite laboratory and testing procedures. They will determine acceptable waste-streams and work closely with operations to ensure proper processing.  Additionally all received materials will require fingerprint testing in our onside lab, as well as testing outbound effluent. This position will be responsible for analyzing potential waste –streams to determine not only what can be treated, but also how it is treated.  The planet only has a limited amount of water, our goal is to restore industrial use water into a usable resource.

A Day in the Life

A potential client sends you a sample to determine if their water can be treated and recovered? Inspect and calibrate the lab equipment and prepare for a busy day.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set clear expectation, lead, coordinate, and direct Lab Technicians (and WWT Technicians) on all Central Laboratory initiatives. 
  • Establish universal standards for all CWT based laboratories.
  • Conduct quarterly audits of all CWT laboratories to ensure technician activities are being performed in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Design and lead laboratory projects that result in improved cost, quality, efficiency, or other general process improvements.  Devise and internally publicize ‘Alternative Treatment Matrix ‘.  i.e. Lowering T5 costs, Ultra Filtration, Electrocoagulation, Pre pit material blending.
  • Develop and extend certified industry lab services to external client base.
  • Facilitate information gathering, and formal letter drafting for resolving deficiencies and proactively communicating future compliance with municipal, state, and federal officials.  Manager should requisition legal counsel where defensive or offensive protocol warrants representation.
  • Promote the brand, as well as its capabilities within industry, trade, and scientific associations.   i.e.  Water purity campaigns that well position the Company in Milwaukee Water Council networking environments.
  • Steers efforts regarding Used Oil as a product grade material.  Implements a protectionary process within the supply chain of salable used oil.  No claims – No liability alignment.  Oil is an “As Is” byproduct.
  • Trains Laboratory Technicians to a personal/industry standard of competency examination.   Designs coursework that follows NLAP (National Laboratory Accreditation Program) methods.  Company accepts it as cost prohibitive, yet long range goal to obtain NLAP accreditation.


  • Minimum of 4 year Chemistry degree or related science
  • Minimum 3 years industry related experience
  • Ability to calibrate instrumentation
  • Experience with ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) GC (Gas Chromatography), Oil & Grease Machin


  •  CHMM or equivalent certification
  • Experience keeping accurate documentation
  • Ability to obtain a State Certification in Waste Water Treatment
