Who we are looking for:

This is an internal role to provide support to the Head of Indirect Tax - Firm’s Tax. The work will involve the day to day oversight of the production of PwC’s own VAT and other indirect tax returns and to provide indirect tax advice and support to the Firm’s client facing and support staff. The role will focus on UK and global indirect tax matters impacting the Firm as well as embracing digitisation to improve the Firm’s VAT team’s processes.

The team consists of the Head of Firm’s Indirect Tax, a Manager and 2 Senior Associates. This position reports to the Head of Indirect Tax.

Key Objectives and responsibilities of this role will include the following:

  • Day to day management of the process for timely delivery of PwC’s own VAT returns including performing initial reviews of the returns to be presented to the Head of Indirect Tax for review and submission.

  • Provision of indirect tax advice to other teams in the business in respect of UK and global indirect tax matters.

  • Liaison with UK and other tax authorities, in conjunction with the Head of Indirect Tax, on domestic and international indirect tax issues affecting the UK Firm.

  • Foster knowledge-sharing within and outside the VAT team to ensure advice is willingly sought, where required.

  • Proactively deal with overseas indirect tax risks utilising the Firm’s resources.

  • Proactively adopt and embrace digitisation to drive improvements and efficiencies in the Firm’s VAT processes and reporting.

  • Ad hoc project work.

The position will be based in Birmingham or London. If Birmingham, occasional travel to the London offices will be required.

About the role

The Firm’s Indirect Tax team manages PwC UK’s own VAT affairs. It ensures that the UK Firm meets its UK and global indirect tax obligations on a timely basis for all its legal entities. It provides support and assistance to other internal functions, client facing teams and support staff, to minimise the risk of non-compliance, both in the UK and overseas.

Clients include, but are not limited to; the PwC client facing teams and support staff (reviewing engagement letters to determine the correct VAT treatment of the supply), Internal Firm’s Service (advising on the VAT implications of non-routine transactions and developments within the Firm) and UKIT (raising Change Management Requests for VAT changes to the finance system and scoping requirements for developers). You will support Facilities/Procurement, Office of General Counsel, Company Secretarial, Risk and the Firm’s Tax team acting as a subject matter expert on VAT.


Key skills:

  • Broad and deep knowledge of VAT law, guidance and its practical application.

  • A working knowledge of computerised accounting systems operating in a large organisation.

  • A collaborative and inclusive approach to dealing with all stakeholders both inside and outside the VAT team.

  • Confidence to ask questions and to use initiative especially in dealing with areas of ambiguity.

  • Ability to work under pressure managing several strands of work to a coherent conclusion whilst working to deadlines.

  • A proactive approach, actively identifying problems and risk areas, taking responsibility for developing and implementing a solution together with support from the Head of Indirect Tax.

  • Consultative approach with the ability to influence and persuade Internal Firm’s Service and wider Firm stakeholders and to manage conflicting views.

  • Act with integrity to ensure the Firm’s VAT reputation is upheld at all times.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate tax-technical issues to a non-tax audience.

Key experience:

Possess broad technical VAT knowledge, gained from;

  • advising in a professional firm at manager level; or

  • working in a VAT role within industry; or

  • a wide range of business experience in HMRC at a senior level.

Applications are also welcome from senior associates with the capability and desire to progress to manager in the near future.

  • VAT qualification such as CTA preferred but not essential if proven to operate at that level.
