RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Inpatient Coding Supervisor provides supervisory direction to the Coding Staff for the Inpatient Team and act as an expert resource to Medical Center services in the areas of coding compliance, data quality and security, data retrieval, chart analysis, and utilization management,. The supervisor is responsible to hire, evaluate and take corrective action when warranted, monitor and assign tasks; coordinate orientations, facilitate training; monitor productivity and quality, service delivery and system functions; write procedures and actively participate in procedure and standards development. The Inpatient Coding Supervisor will oversee all functions of daily coding operations as needed to assure efficient workflow, and will be called upon to resolve issues as necessary. The Inpatient Coding Supervisor supervise Clinical Data Specialist Coders and other assigned staff; design and conduct on-the-job training; develop and implement policies, procedures, and coding procedure manuals; and coordinate activities of the department with other hospital services and outside agencies. Serve as an expert resource to other departments and services in the areas related to coding.


1. Responsible for coordinating and administering professional development for all coders within the company/facility


2. Provides opportunities for all coders to develop additional skills across multiple medical specialties


3. Promotes cross training of coders throughout company/facility


4. Ensures quality account services to patients by working with team members to execute process flow and achieve quality objectives


5. Monitors daily coding volumes, high dollar accounts, productivity and turnaround times


6. Supervises daily initial and concurrent coding to assure turnaround time goals are met providing a seamless workflow at the facility level


7. Supervises final coding turnaround times to assure timely claims processing


8. Provides second reviews and responses to queries from the coders on complex records


9. Run daily, monthly and periodic reports on account volumes, productivity, turnaround times, and quality measures for management staff


10. Participate in the interviewing, reference checks and hiring of new staff


11. Monitor staff performance, perform evaluations and make recommendations regarding disciplinary action


12. Plan and coordinate monthly team section meetings and education, track programs for staff, including coding verification, coding problem identification/review, and staff development


13. Work with Coding Manager to establish coding compliance standards, procedures and policies


14. With the HIM Manager and Department Director, establish a plan to ensure data quality, security and ongoing monitoring of data access


15. Attend various planning meetings as needed


16. Perform the work of Clinical Data Specialists


17. Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) AND four years of ICD and/or CPT coding or utilization management experience OR equivalent education/experience.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises Clinical Data Coding Specialists and Clinical Data Coding/ UM Specialists

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General guidance and coaching.


REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent

AND

Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), Radiology Certified Coder (RCC) or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder (ROCC).

AND

Four years coding experience or equivalent education/experience

AND

Two years lead or supervisory experience.


DESIRED

Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) AND four years of ICD and/or CPT coding or utilization management experience OR equivalent education/experience.
