Your Role and Responsibilities

Infrastructure Service Specialist - Linux or Unix
Responsible for the solution construction, implementation and systems integration, delivering high quality solutions to clients in response to varying business requirements. Tasks performed include integrating hardware, software, and network solutions. Identify project requirements, developing solution delivery, which may include vendors and subcontractors. Apply their IT Specialist skills in an internal or external customer billable services and implementation environment.

Responsible for providing IT services in a billable project/engagement or providing technical support in a sales organization.

As an individual member of a team, performs a technical role in support of the solution construction, implementation, and system integration in a technology/industry specialty or product sales. The IT Specialist assists in delivery of high quality solutions to clients in response to specific business requirements. Develops technical skills and absorbs professional knowledge quickly. Performs assigned technical tasks including study, analysis, programming, product installation. The IT Specialist has some specific product, technology, or industry-related specialized skills and works with proposals, requirements, designs, implementations and production projects/engagements. May use tools to analyze and implement portions of a customer solution.

Performs a variety of responsibilities including supporting solution construction, implementation, and system integration in a technology/industry specialty or product sales. Services may also include assisting in the delivery of high quality solutions to clients in response to specific business requirements.

Incumbents draw upon technical skills and IT knowledge related to incumbent's position, team and department to provide services in an information technology environment. Responsible for providing IT services in a billable project/engagement or providing technical support in a sales organization. Consistently exercises discretion and independent judgment to support the attainment of department functions/objectives. Demonstrates some specific product, technology, or industry-related specialized skills and works with proposals, requirements, designs, implementations and production projects/engagements. Independently performs assigned technical tasks including study, analysis, design, programming, and product installation. Works on professional level projects with authority to make independent choices free from immediate direction or supervision. In a marketing unit, provides the technical knowledge in support of the sale of hardware and software. This can involve participating in the development, packaging and distribution of a solution, or the justification, requirements or proof-of-concept in a proposal project. On occasion, provides technical advice to project managers/ leaders and gives some technical direction to team members such as subcontractors or client personnel.

Knowledge Management: Global knowledge sharing and management is key to IBM's success. IT Specialists will participate in, and/or be responsible for the creation, harvesting, protection, and reuse of IBM's intellectual capital. They will participate actively in knowledge sharing activities like communities of practice, forums, conferences and/or other knowledge exchanges.

Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Skills:
- 2-5 years experience in Linux or Unix implementation, preferably as specialist or consultant not operator or admin.

Environment:

Displays specialized technical skills related to the position, team, and department. Uses discretion and has latitude to support the attainment of department functions/objectives. Demonstrates required proficiencies and knowledge of information technology and their technical specialty to support attainment of team and department objectives. Applies applicable products/systems technical training, experience, and knowledge in order to assist customers and IBM field technical personnel. Understands and applies knowledge of information technology and associated tools and services across several platforms, processes and architectures. Position may require coordination of activities of peers and more experienced team members to implement technical solutions.

Communication/Negotiation:

Engaged as independent information technology professional who advises others on tools, technology, and methodology related to implementing IT solutions in their area of technical specialty. Requires command of oral and written communication skills to work internally with client team, managers and peers. Develops and provides specialized written and verbal communications to customers, peers, and support personnel. Designs, develops, and documents modifications to computer systems or programs based on and related to user or system design specifications. Effectively negotiates with peers, and occasionally with customers, to implement technical solutions. Exchanges information and ideas pertinent to project. Provides input to the design and implementation of technical solutions that meet our client's needs.

Problem Solving:

Exhibits analytical ability and creativity in developing and integrating solution deliverables for medium size projects. Recognizes job-related problems, uses judgment to resolve problems related to the technical solution being implemented, and completes technical tasks for the project / engagement / proposal within specialty. Independently generates technical solutions, based on analytical skills involving technology, methodology, processes, tools and solution components. Uses discretion and has latitude to improve the technical procedures and processes within area of technical specialty to enhance the implementation of a customer solution.

Contribution/Leadership:

Will partake in, and/or be responsible for the creation, harvesting, protection, and reuse of IBM's intellectual capital. Actively participates in knowledge sharing activities like communities of practice, forums, conferences and/or other knowledge exchange. Uses discretion to provide advice in technical / operational domain of specialization while working with customers, vendors and subcontractors to implement IT solutions. Understands the departmental mission of the IT Specialist and applies this knowledge in performing broader project related objectives. Works to cultivate and maintain a very positive relationship among team members. May lead small teams in the development and implementation of customer solutions in area of technical specialty.

Impact on Business/Scope:

Accountable for individual, team or department work products, and for the impact of the results on functional activities. Supports IT activities that contribute to business results including participating in development of proposals. Participates in overall departmental program planning in the areas of cost, schedule and technical risk. Quality of deliverables and verbal communications impacts customer satisfaction. Provides recommendations to improve team/department operational, technical, and customer satisfaction results. Assists and, on occasion, is responsible for identifying new billable IT services opportunities.




Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • At least 2 - 5 years working with Linux or Unix implementation, preferably as specialist or consultant not operator or admin role
  • Related Degree in Telecommunication, Computer Software, Network communication Engineer
  • Proven track record of experience in Linux or Unix support or administration
  • Familiar with delivery environment
  • Able to communicate clearly both internal and external party
  • Client facing role
