Recycle Ann Arbor is searching for a Human Resources Generalist to join our Human Resources department. Recycle Ann Arbor is a mission-driven Zero Waste organization whose mission is to develop and operate innovative reuse, recycling, and zero-waste programs that improve the environmental quality of our community. As a Mission Based Non-Profit Organization, our annual budget is $8.5M, almost entirely generated by earned income from Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) recycling processing services, Recycling Curbside Collection Services, Recycling Drop Off Services and Construction & Demolition (C&D) Recovery Services. We have approximately 60 employees.


Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Human Resources Director, the Human Resources Generalist will be responsible for payroll processing, benefits and 401(k) administration, recruiting, and general personnel record maintenance. Aids in Administration of human resources policies and procedures to support business unit and company philosophy, culture and strategic goals. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Administer payroll and benefits for all employees

  • Responsible for administration of FMLA and disability claims, leaves of absence, short/long term disability, Workers Compensation, ACA reporting, and OSHA Log reporting

  • Actively participates in the company wide Safety Committee

  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings. Manage recruiting workflow in Applicant Tracking System

  • Continuously evaluate the onboarding process to ensure it is effective

  • Assist HR Director with the annual employee benefit renewal process 

  • Provide support to employees in various HR-related topics 

  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with training, continuing education, and work assessments. 

  • Assist with updating policies and procedures as needed

  • Personnel file maintenance for all employees 

  • Conduct exit interviews, report personnel issues, and resolve personnel matters, as appropriate 

  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Human Resources field

  • Understanding of state and federal employment regulations

  • Awareness of OSHA regulations and compliance

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Excellent customer services skills

Education and Experience Requirements:

Associates Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or another related field 

2-4 years of Human Resources experience

Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift at least 15 pounds unassisted at times

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, squat for extended periods of time
