Provide leadership for the development and execution of long-term commodity strategy across Medtronic business units (BU). This position will engage with business unit leadership to ensure delivery of effective procurement strategies and standards that deliver to Medtronics overall operations and business results.

Through strategic leadership, the Global Commodities Leader will facilitate BU discussions that will optimize the commodity in terms of quality, cycle/response time, technology, risk, and total cost for our Metal Components ($1.2B in spend). Partnering closely with Medtronics supply management business unit organizations, this individual will work to leverage cross BU strategies at the center and continuously work to develop and improve supplier leverage by consolidating the business needs with the broader interests of Medtronic. In addition, this individual will be responsible for leveraging strategic sourcing processes across Medtronic by maximizing the companys combined purchase power to reduce overall cost of ownership and acquisition through strategic negotiation and optimization of supplier partnerships within their primary categories of oversight.


The Commodity Director will have overall responsibility for leading a cross-functional, cross-divisional commodity team in the development and implementation of strategies and goals for assigned commodities, in support of business objectives for cycle/response time, quality assurance, technology/new product development, risk mitigation, and total cost. This individual will own strategies that extend through the full supply chain including primary and sub-tier suppliers.

Sourcing and Commodity Management

- Leads the pan Medtronic category strategy development and deployment process for the category

- Lead strategic sourcing events across pan Medtronic providing project management and leadership

- Leads efforts for supplier analysis and selection processes, make/buy, outsourcing, and transitions required to support the category strategy.

- Pricing management of assigned suppliers in conjunction with the BU leads

- Plays a lead role in the negotiation. Includes many types of agreements with suppliers including purchasing agreements, development, supply, VMI, indemnification, etc. Monitor agreements and expectations. Partners closely with Medtronic legal department in working contract language.

- Obtain and communicate market condition and technology trend information regarding commodities and suppliers. Suggest and implement appropriate business strategy changes.

- Develop technology roadmaps and corresponding supplier roadmaps where needed. Provides technical support as the commodity expert from Global Supply Management.

Supplier Cost Optimization

- Responsible for long term supply roadmaps to support overall commodity strategy

- Identify and appropriately leverages technology innovation from commodity supply base

- Utilizes analytics and defined metrics (e.g. focus matrix) to identify and organize suppliers accordingly, in conjunction with QA, BUs and Operations teams.

- Working with internal and external resources, responsible for driving commodity rationalization, simplification, localization. Focus on identification of synergies and identification, forming and leveraging strategic alliances

Supplier Performance Optimization

- Support the BU requirements of quality and service ensuring the supply base has the capability and capacity to support Medtronic growth

- Work in conjunction with the Center of Excellence team to deploy Supplier Relationship Management programs and other best practices at the suppliers which cross pan MDT


Bachelors Degree and 10+ years of strategic sourcing, supply chain and commodity management experience in a large, multi-divisional corporation with 7+ years of managerial experience OR advanced degree with 8+ years of strategic sourcing, supply chain and commodity management experience in a large, multi-divisional corporate with 7+ years of managerial experience.


**** 8+ years metal component commodity management and negotiation experience.

Experience in forming and maintaining strategic alliances.

Experience in cross-functional commodity teams.

Masters Degree and/or Engineering Degree in Material Science / Metallurgy

CPIM Certification

Knowledge of e-commerce initiatives

Knowledge of FDA regulated industries

Knowledge of raw materials

Proficient in computers

Excellent written communication skills

Previous experience in a medical device / life sciences industry
