Duties & Responsibilities

MSC is searching for a Formulation Associate Scientist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and it is on-site in Gaithersburg, Maryland.


  • Design fit-for-purpose formulation and stability studies and lead execution of those studies.
    • Execute studies for the evaluation and development of stable formulations for the vaccine candidates at the center, including the following subtasks
    • Generate samples for analysis using standard laboratory techniques (buffer prep, dialysis, dilution, etc.)
    • Analyze samples employing spectroscopic, calorimetric and other instrumentation.
    • Design studies in collaboration with team members.
  • Analyze, collate and interpret data in collaboration with team members.
  • Develop and execute assays for biological product characterization, formulation development and stability testing of recombinant protein-based vaccines, proteinaceous nanoparticles, and virus-like particles.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to formulation team members.
  • Present data in small group, department and conference settings.
  • Coordinate and execute routine maintenance and troubleshooting (problem diagnosis and repair) for laboratory instrumentation, including spectrometers, calorimeters, particle characterization and robotics systems.
  • Write and review technical reports and protocols documenting formulation, stability and method development studies.


  • B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in therapeutic protein or vaccine formulation in an industry setting.
  • Hands-on work experience with analysis of proteins or vaccines by two or more of the following techniques:
    • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
    • Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS, Zetasizer, Mastersizer)
    • Sub-visible Particle Analysis (HIAC, LO)
    • Absorbance (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy
    • Fluorescence Spectroscopy (HTF, DSF, UNcle, UNit)
    • Circular Dichroism
    • Viscosity measurements
  • Experience with classic protein biochemistry sample handling and analysis (UF/DF buffer preparation, SDS-PAGE, UV-Visible Spectroscopy).
  • Experience with data analysis software (Excel, Prism, SigmaPlot, etc.).
  • Solid knowledge of the protein chemistry; understanding of biophysical and bioanalytical properties of proteins and biologics a plus.
  • Experience with biologic stability and/or forced degradation studies strongly desired.
  • Experience with Design of Experiment (DOE) software, design and execution is a plus.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
