The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center with three geographic sites in Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ; Jacksonville, FL; and Rochester, MN and supports 360 members, 10 research programs, and 13 shared resources. Mayo Clinic has committed substantial resources towards the growth and development of the cancer center and aligned programs. This commitment includes research and clinical facilities, novel radiation based therapeutic modalities, infrastructure support for programs, and incremental clinical and research positions.

In that spirit, Mayo Clinic is seeking a national leader in clinical practice and research to develop and execute the strategic and operating plans to establish the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center as the definitive global leader in cancer care, building on the capabilities of clinical practice, research and education expertise developed over more than 150 years.

Position description
The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Executive Director is responsible for providing the overall leadership, vision, direction and development for the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center structure, programs, multidisciplinary clinical service lines and staff. The Executive Director is also responsible for oversight of all aspects of the Cancer Center through collaboration with leadership of the Practice, Research and Education shields. The Executive Director serves as the Principal Investigator for the Mayo Clinic National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and leads innovative research strategies to transform the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Excellence
  • Ensure differentiated care for serious or complex medical conditions through focused discovery and optimization of the best resources for diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention.
  • Facilitate engagement of Mayo Clinic Research, Education and Clinical Practice departments and divisions in the use of artificial intelligence, digital and other advanced technologies to achieve cancer care operational excellence.
  • Direct the implementation, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, and improvement of clinical outcomes, evidence-based cancer research and standards, value-oriented oncology programs, and innovative clinical methodologies and opportunities across multidisciplinary service lines.
  • Build collaborative relationships with applicable internal and external partners to ensure easy to navigate digital and physical access for patients.
  • Identify faculty expertise needed in the Center and facilitate recruitment of talent on behalf of the Cancer Center.
Discovery and Innovation
  • Establish a nimble innovation model to accelerate discovery-translation-application, leveraging both internal resources and partnerships.
  • Partner with Clinical Practice, Research, and Education leadership across all Mayo sites to define/refine priorities related to the work of the Cancer Center to advance growth and expansion.
  • Recruit and retain leading cancer scientists.
Financial Stewardship
  • Facilitate the growth of extramural funding (e.g., development, grants and contracts).
  • Maintain overall accountability for developing, managing, and adhering to the cancer center budget to meet the organization's fiscal standards and expectations.
  • Participate in the annual update of financial statements and documents.
  • Allocate appropriate resources to create an efficient and effective business model.
Adherence to Regulatory Standards
  • Ensure the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center's compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and established organizational policies and procedures.
Reputation Management
  • Increase the preeminence of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and its reputation and brand.
  • Participate in philanthropic activities and attend fundraising activities as appropriate. Identify potential donors. Cultivate, solicit, and steward public speaking engagements.
  • Represent the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center at national and international meetings.
License or certification

Physician-Scientist
An internationally recognized Physician/Scientist with extensive expertise in research is required. Previous or current grant(s) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is preferred. A track record of research excellence and previous leadership experience in academic medicine is required. The academic rank of Professor is required. A commitment to and record of accomplishments in cancer research and treatment, including deep knowledge of the field of cancer and where it is going. A reputation of personal excellence in scientific achievements with a deep understanding of research and how to represent and advance research amid competing priorities.

Senior Academic Leadership Experience
Successful senior leadership role within academic medicine or industry (if combined with a prior faculty position or leadership role in academia). Demonstrated excellence in attracting, recruiting and developing world-class scientific and clinical leaders, team building, vision and strategy setting, and execution of multi-faceted decisions are important components of the leadership experience sought in this recruitment. Ability to run a busy integrated and matrixed clinical practice is required. Demonstrated excellence in planning, interpersonal, leadership, and written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to innovate, lead boldly, develop, implement and promote integrative research & practice activities across the shields in a rapidly growing and changing organization is required. A record of collaboration with basic scientists.

Academically Active Leader
Due to Mayo’s unique culture, the next Executive Director must be an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., who either is active clinically or scientifically and will remain so during their tenure. Must be board-certified in their medical specialty.
