The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County, California: SamTrans bus service, including Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail service and the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The San Mateo County Transit District’s Rail Division seeks an Engineer III (Architect, Facilities and Stations) to be responsible for planning, project development, technical design, and plan review of Capital and State of Good Repair for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain) stations, facilities and properties.


The Engineer III will develop and maintain technical design criteria, standards, engineering studies and reports for commuter railroad facilities and stations, be responsible for budget, costs and schedules from inception through completion of construction, manage and oversee Caltrain architectural, facilities and stations improvement projects, identify root causes of engineering architect issues and recommend appropriate solutions, provide conceptual plans and reviews of design development for short and long range Caltrain station improvement projects, which includes station buildings; accessibility improvements; boarding platforms; passenger shelters; pedestrian access and circulation; bus and auto parking and circulation; station ticketing structures, review and evaluate the performance of the work by consultants on the design and construction of Caltrain capital and maintenance projects, as well as externally sponsored third party projects, provide architect engineering support to internal stake holders to maintain railroad stations (including historical stations) and facilities in a state of good repair, develop the Station Utilities and Assets Map and perform the station and facility inspection and assessment as required by the regulators and review plans, specifications and estimates for capital projects, including stations, crew facilities, railway vehicle maintenance and operations facilities, and its related improvements.


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Architecture with four (4) years of full-time professional experience in the planning and design of public transit structural projects. Registration as a Professional Engineer or Architect is highly desirable. Must be proficient in AutoCAD. Must be able and willing to conduct station and facility inspections. Must possess effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Must possess a valid California driver’s license with safe driving record.
