The Senior Employee Relations Partner is an experienced member of the Human Resources team and works under the general direction of the Manager, Employee Relations performing a range of employee relations activities that support the employees and leaders of UAB Medicine. The Senior Employee Relations Partner serves as a trusted advisor to managers and employees to provide guidance on a wide range of employee relations issues. This role will conduct workplace investigations with an emphasis on HR, including employment policy violations, retaliations, harassment, and discrimination allegations.

The Senior Employee Relations Partner serves as a trusted advisor to managers and employees to provide guidance on a wide range of employee relations issues. This role will conduct workplace investigations with an emphasis on HR, including employment policy violations, retaliations, harassment, and discrimination allegations.

 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 

Employee Relations

  • Ensure that employee relations issues are addressed in a timely manner that is consistent with the UAB Medicine philosophy and mission

    • Serve as a resource and liaison for all employee relations issues inspiring confidence and trust, demonstrating a knowledgeable and comprehensive approach

    • Demonstrate complete understanding  UAHSF, UAB Health System, and UAB Hospital as well as UAB Medicine policies and procedures

    • Interpret and administer policies and procedures fairly and consistently

    • Review all terminations for compliance with policy and legal requirements

    • Advise and educate management in the interpretation of personnel policies and employee handbooks

    • Remain available to listen to employee problems and concerns; adjust schedule whenever possible to see employees who drop in without appointments

    • Promptly return voice and e-mail messages to facilitate quick resolution of relations issues

    • Always attempt to understand employee and leadership needs and considers both aspects prior to making recommendations; follow-up on recommendations to ensure outcome

    • Counsel and advise on employee and policy matters and disciplinary documentation

    • Coordinate resolution of conflicts between employee and leader

    • Assist leaders with drafting/finalizing employee discipline documents; review final draft of all disciplinary documents prior to leader administering to employee

    • As needed, participate in leader/employee meetings to facilitate a prompt and positive solution

    • Aware of available HR resources for employees; i.e. EACC

    • Advise leadership on appropriate actions to take with regards to hiring, terminating, counseling, disciplining, training, and supervision

    • Proactively communicate trends and issues to Mgr-Employee Relations

    • Demonstrate a preventive approach to employee relations, coaching leadership as appropriate

    • Assist with communication to ensure employees receive the coaching and disciplinary process as constructive and attempting to help them succeed

    • Participate in sponsored events and activities to remain knowledgeable of employee relations climate

    • Identify opportunities while assisting leaders in disciplinary matters and proactively assist them to ensure a positive outcome

 
 
 
Human Resource Compliance
 
    • In collaboration with HR professionals, legal and others, conduct workplace investigations with an emphasis on HR matters, including employment policy violations, retaliation, harassment, and discrimination allegations, ethics hotline matters, EEOC charges, and the formal grievance process

    • Ensure policies, principles, and practices are applied consistently and fairly

    • Investigate employee concerns, explain policies and procedures, and present findings in a formal summary format

    • Investigate concerns in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner to mitigate risk to the organization

    • Ensure appropriate inclusion of appropriate groups, i.e. BTAM, UAB Police, Compliance, etc to proactively ensure workplace and employee safety during events

    • Provide support to others regarding the development of investigation plans, effective interview techniques, note taking, recommendations, and closures

    • Maintain appropriate employee relations files and records.

 
General/Other
 
    • Strong knowledge in the areas of employment, benefit and compensation, including the ability to effectively communicate UAB Medicine practices, policies and guidelines.

    • Present Employee Relations topics to leadership and employee teams

    • Inspire confidence and trust from staff and leaders to be viewed as a credible and trustworthy source of assistance

    • Promote direct communication and positive rapport between employees and leaders

    • Demonstrate the Core Values: Own It, Do Right, Always Care, and Work Together

Qualifications

Required:

Position requires Bachelors degree in Business, Psychology, Human Resource Management, or related field, and five (5) years of related experience. Extensive experience with conflict resolution and complex investigations. Knowledge of federal and state employment laws. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to give presentations in a public setting.

Exceptional ability to effectively operate in complex situations demonstrating effective organizational, listening, probing, problem-solving, negotiating, and investigatory skills. Ability to synthesize data and identify root problems/causes.  Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deliver against deadlines. Ability to set priorities.

Related experience in healthcare.   Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
