BASIC FUNCTION: 
The Clinical Educator provides support to the director and managers within the division.  He/She assists, coordinates and influences nursing practice excellence in the patient care area.  The Clinical Educator acts as a resource person for staff and works cooperatively within the organization to coordinate nursing policy, maintain standards of care, develop and/or teach specific learning programs, and performance improvement consistent with established strategic plan, goals and objectives for  patient care services and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:  None

NATUE AND SCOPE: 
Acting as an internal consultant, the Clinical Educator is actively involved in assisting with the problem solving for other departments.  He/she interacts with all levels of staff throughout the hospital.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 
Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.

Assesses and identifies in writing educational needs of employees.
 
Writes measurable course objectives.

Prepares appropriate learning materials.

Arranges for required facilities, instructors and equipment for educational offerings.

Maintains adequate records: attendance, course/program summaries, test scores, certificates, etc.

Trains staff on all computer systems (e.g., Paragon, Hospital Intranet, etc.).

Provides information to employees on furthering their career development.

Obtains educational materials for use in teaching and demonstrating nursing and other health related activities.  Evaluates educational materials as needed.

Provides and/or coordinates training programs on new equipment, policies and/or procedures.

Assists with equipment for programs presented in the hospital.

Utilizes formal and informal teaching methods.  Utilizes evidence-based theories of learning in developing educational program and educational materials.

Coordinates and obtains resources in support on division educational programs or activities, i.e., equipment, education materials.

Provides education on all new/changed policies, procedure, protocols and all new equipment and ensures record maintenance of such.

Selects appropriate instructional procedures or methods such as individual training, group instruction, self-study, lectures, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role play and computer-based training.

Represents department on assigned committees.

Participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings and planning days.

Attends in-services, staff meetings, and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager.

Develops/reviews orientation programs for staff, functioning as a role model and resource.

Provides direction and support to mentors with orienteers and student educators.

Reviews and evaluates orienteers progress and communicates specific problems/needs to the department manager.

Reviews employee records for accuracy and JACHO compliance.

Provides notification to staff regarding mandatory requirements including but not limited to essential education and age specific requirements - as appropriate.

Utilizes evidence-based findings as a basis for recommended improvement processes.

Implements education calendar and spreadsheet to provide monthly report on employee compliance.

Reviews, revises and develops policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
RN with current license in the State of Florida required; BSN, MSN preferred.

Current American Heart Association BLS-HCP.

At least four (4) years’ experience as a registered nurse preferred.

For critical care areas a minimum of three (3) years of critical care experience required; cardiovascular ICU experience preferred.

Teaching experience preferably in a healthcare setting or at least one (1) year experience as a charge nurse, nurse manager or other instructor is preferred.
