The Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) team tackles space explorations toughest problems by developing the heat shields for our Crew Dragon program. This hardware must survive the most extreme environments known to mankind and protect our vehicle through atmospheric entry. As a Build Engineer on the TPS team, you will be responsible for design for manufacturability concepts as well as integration and testing of the full vehicle. You will spearhead tooling design, process improvements, reusability qualification, and non-conforming hardware evaluation. Furthermore, Build Engineers at times may be expected act as de-facto supervisors and advisers to production technicians and other skilled labor partners. You thrive in a hands-on environment and will spend time in the office, on the factory floor, and in the lab to execute on the mission to bring the capability of flying astronauts back to the United States.


  • Work closely with vehicle analysts and design team to ensure solutions meet the requirements for vehicle design as well as the manufacturing processes
  • Develop production procedures/processes and manage the transition of parts and assemblies from development to high rate production
  • Coordinate and execute development, qualification, and acceptance testing of systems and tooling needed to meet hardware deadlines
  • Execute design for manufacturability changes to enhance production efficiency
  • Create original CAD models and prints for flight and/or tooling components
  • Create and maintain build schedules
  • Resolve and analyze manufacturing discrepancies, while interfacing with the quality team (resolving issues for design, fabrication and assembly)
  • Participate in design reviews internally and with suppliers and customers
  • Source, retain, and advise new and experienced vendors from a technical perspective


  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering physics
  • 1+ years of professional hands-on experience with complex mechanical or thermal systems (student project team or internship experience is also applicable)


  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Experience using NX (Unigraphics) or other parametric modeling software
  • Experience conducting FEA structural and thermal analysis
  • Experience with high temperature composites design and manufacturing
  • Strong understanding of thermal dynamics
  • Basic understanding of aerothermal heating and reentry dynamics
  • Ability to read and generate drawings
  • Ability to interact with engineers from other disciplines to develop loads, requirements, and constraints for thermal protection systems materials
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity


  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed
