Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement, University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Retiree Relations/UW Retirement Association Executive Director.

Position Purpose
The Director of Retiree Relations develops and leads University Advancements comprehensive engagement programs and services for UW retirees.  This position reports to the Vice President for Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement (ASE) and is responsible for the personnel management, program operations and financial administration of the retiree relations program.  The Director of Retiree Relations serves as the Executive Director for the University of Washington Retirement Association (UWRA), an independent 501c3 organization, to lead collaborative initiatives which advance the mission of the UW and the UWRA. This position is a University Advancement program director within the Office of Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement and works collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve strategic engagement goals and objectives.

University Advancements Retiree Relations program exists to advance the mission of the UW.  It works in partnership with the UWRA and internal and external partners to develop and implement programs, communications and services to engage UW retirees in a purpose-driven relationship with the UW and each other.  This position brings subject matter expertise on issues, opportunities and challenges related to aging adults and the social and psychological life-stages of retirement.  It raises general awareness of the value and impact of the retiree community and recognizes and celebrates the important contributions retirees make in the life of the UW.

Director of Retiree Relations
The Director of Retiree Relations oversees a broad and diverse direct-service program portfolio, including but not limited to an active dues-paying UWRA membership community, volunteer service, philanthropy, event production and comprehensive communications and outreach programs.  The Director oversees the retiree relations/UWRA office, an on-campus location open to UW faculty, staff and retirees.  It supervises one permanent, full-time Associate Director and oversees multiple part-time paid and unpaid employees and volunteers.  The Director exercises significant independent fiscal responsibility for the retiree relations budget and works collaboratively with UWRA leadership to facilitate and administer UWRA resources and personnel. 

The position is responsible for extensive internal and external communications and coordination with UW Bothell, UW Tacoma, and UW units and programs which serve retirees, including but not limited to Human Resources, Benefits, UW IT, Transportation Services, academic units and Colleges and external partners and agencies which serve retirees and older adults.  The Director interacts directly with current and retired staff and faculty at all levels and with UW executive leadership, donors, volunteers, vendors and other service providers.

The Director is responsible for working collaboratively with UW and UWRA leaders to develop and lead annual and long-range planning for the UWRA and University Advancements retiree relations program, including overall strategy, program management, budget/fiscal planning and program assessment. The Director advises the UW on issues and topics regarding retired staff and faculty and their relationship to the UW.

Additional Specific duties/responsibilities:
o Representative for retirees to UW and University Advancement programs and leaders.
o Represent UW retirees as invited, non-voting guest to Faculty Councils
o Primary point of contact for non-benefit, non-HR retiree relations issues
o Representative for retirees to Transportation Services regarding the retiree complementary parking benefit
o Representative to UW leadership regarding retiree recognition, retiree distinguished service award and general retiree celebration
o Engage with and represent UW at national professional associations, i.e.  AROHE, Encore, etc.
o Lead and manage the selection process for the UW Distinguished Retiree Service Award

Executive Director of UW Retirement Association
The Director serves as the Executive Director of the UWRA, an independent 501c3 non-profit organization formally affiliated with the UW through a Cooperation and Operations Agreement. As Executive Director, this position works collaboratively with the UWRA Board of Directors on policies, programs and issues relative to the UWRA and its official relationship to the UW, including but not limited to the dues-paying membership program and outreach, UWRA finances, specific board initiatives/priorities and those practices and procedures related to shared services and obligations.  The Director serves as an ex-officio member of the UWRA Board of Directors, acts as the UWs primary liaison to UWRA leadership, consults with and advises the Treasurer and Board President on annual and long-term business and strategic planning and administers the UWRA board-approved UWRA budget.

Additional specific duties/responsibilities in coordination with UWRA Board of Directors include:
o Lead and manage all UWRA non-profit governance meetings, i.e. monthly executive officer and monthly full-board meetings
o Lead and oversee all UWRA events and communications, i.e. monthly/quarterly signature events, all print and electronic member communications, etc.
o Lead, oversee and coordinate all UWRA budget and resource management
o Lead and oversee all UWRA non-profit legal, financial and tax reporting
o Supervise all UWRA personnel and volunteers
o Liaison between UWRA and Faculty Councils for council appointment recommendations
o Oversee UWRAs fundraising for and awarding of UWRA scholarships and (in partnership with the Graduate School) fellowships
o Represent UWRA with Era Living and manage that relationship

Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement Program Director
The Director of Retiree Relations is an Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement program director who works collaboratively within University Advancement and the UW to coordinate and integrate retiree relations programs, services and communications to directly support University Advancement and UW goals and objectives.  This includes but is not limited to retiree and UWRA data integration, donor/philanthropic coordination, brand alignment, volunteer engagement, etc. The Director provides leadership and subject matter expertise on issues, challenges and opportunities for effective and purpose-driven engagement of older adults.

Additional Specific duties/responsibilities:
o Represent retirees/UWRA on ASE executive leadership and management teams
o Coordinate/integrate programs and services for aging adults within UA; leverage subject matter experience to benefit non-retiree older adults, i.e. alumni, donors and friends
o Coordinate/integrate corporate sponsorship/affinity revenue generation opportunities within UWRA and retiree relations
Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree and 6-7 years of experience in human and social services, non-profit management, higher education and/or related social fields or communities of practice.  Demonstrated subject matter experience and experience in issues related to aging adults, retirement and/or the social and psychological life stages of retirement. Advanced degree may substitute for some or part of years of experience

Demonstrated ability and experience in program administration, building and leading teams, staff supervision, program integration and assessment.

Proficiency using PC computers and prevailing office management technology; familiarity and comfort with industry-standard Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) software, social media and/or other broad-based engagement software and tools.  Demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.

Knowledge and experience in public higher education leadership, alumni relations, development and marketing and communications.

Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE. 

Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.

Must have regular and reliable personal transportation for frequent local travel and be willing to travel in- and out-of-state when necessary, which may include evenings and weekends.

A valid Washington State drivers license is required to operate the UW Alumni Association Van.

Ability to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for event setup and tear down.

During Events (from setup to tear down) or on Event days:
o Ability to stand 4 or more hours continuously.
o Ability to walk 4 or more hours continuously.
o Ability to work greater than a 10 hour day

Ability to obtain passport and travel internationally. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
