Position Purpose
Reporting directly to the VP of HR Shared Services, the Director of Labor and Employee Relations has enterprise-wide responsibility for the operational delivery of HR inquiry and transaction resolution related to employee relations- including investigations, disciplinary consultation and documentation. They oversee a team that handles inquiry escalations. This role is responsible for managing employee relations issues, developing employee solutions that support management objectives, incorporating fair hiring practices and equal employment opportunities, and documenting and recordkeeping of employer actions as legally required. The leader ensures great customer service with regard to employee relations, operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Principle Duties
  • Collaborate with Shared Services leadership team to provide strategic leadership for Allina Health’s Shared Services organization including setting vision and governance
  • Oversee the operational delivery and administration of all employee relations programs and issues including conflict management, hour and wage issues, safety and leave disputes
  • Execute all employee relations policies, procedures and guidelines and educate leadership on changes and the importance of compliance
  • Oversee Workday transactional support (terminations, compensation, transfers outside of recruit process)
  • Oversee investigation, analysis and evaluation of workplace issues, pre-grievance cases, employee/labor relations issues
  • Provide guidance to the identification, recommendation, implementation and documentation of action to accomplish timely resolution of employee grievances


Bachelor’s Degree in HR, business or related discipline; Master’s degree is preferred


  • 10+ years of employee relations experience; 5+ years HR leadership experience, preferably leading employee relations activity
  • Experience setting up or running a function servicing customer needs
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies pertaining to disciplinary and adverse actions, performance appraisal, leave administration, grievances and appeals
  • Experience conducting/overseeing complex investigations
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Best practice knowledge about employee relations programs, policies, and procedures
