Director, Data Engineering

Are you passionate about technology and enjoy solving problems at scale? Are you someone who likes to understand the why and enjoys leading teams to deliver great experiences and tools? Do you have a service orientation and empathy for the hard work of analysts? We are looking for a passionate technologist with management experience who thrives in collaborative environments. You will lead an agile team of engineers to implement and support Capital Ones next-generation capabilities that enable consumption of cloud data and provide seamless access to datasets. The focus of this role is to deliver great products to our business partners in a well-managed way, and to grow your team and their expertise.

What youll do

  • Lead the development of our enterprise feature engineering platform for machine learning engineering

  • Introduce, educate, and ensure integration of relevant big data, stream processing, container management, and distributed systems technologies

  • Collaborate with partner teams to integrate existing technologies and surface new requirements

  • Build a highly available, scalable platform

  • Work with analysts and product owners to deliver products in an Agile, DevOps, and collaborative environment

  • Grow technical teams, be a caring manager of people, and present to technology & business audiences

  • Provide dependable, customer-oriented support

  • Raise the bar for technical excellence and people management practices

  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to construct a product delivery strategy, reasonable roadmaps, and timelines

  • Crisply communicate our strategy, status, and initiatives with partners and engineers and strongly influence positive key outcomes

  • Navigate the organization as necessary to unblock the team and ensure timely delivery

  • Proactively identify, tackle, and resolve uncertainty by presenting and implementing solutions

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree

  • At least 8 years of application development experience

  • At least 5 years of experience with Python, Java, and Scala

  • At least 5 years of experience developing APIs or SDKs

  • At least 5 years of experience with gRPC and Rest

  • At least 5 years of experience managing technical teams

  • At least 3 years of experience with Hadoop and Spark

  • At least 3 years of experience with Spark Streaming, Kafka Streaming, Flink, or Nifi

  • At least 3 years of experience with Docker, Consul, and Kubernetes

  • At least 3 years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud services

Preferred qualifications

  • Masters degree

  • 5+ years of experience having end-to-end technical ownership over projects

  • 3+ years of experience working with AWS platforms, services, and component technologies, including ECS, DynamoDB, and EMR

  • 3+ years of experience working with data consumption patterns in SQL or Python, like Presto or Athena

  • 3+ years of experience on Agile and DevOps teams, including distributed and offshore teams

  • 3+ years of experience with Git version control & JIRA

  • 1+ years of experience managing a production GraphQL service

  • AWS certification
