Benefits provides strategic vision and operational excellence in the oversight of all health, welfare and retirement programs. This role is responsible for the planning and directing the overall strategy, design, implementation, compliance, administration and communication of benefit programs, ensuring they align with Cengages strategic and financial business objectives and enhance our ability to attract and retain talent. The Director must be able to engage with Cengages executive team, management and employees, manage strong cross-functional relationships with payroll, finance, legal, communications, IT and other HR colleagues, manage multiple service providers and external consultants and serve as a strong leader to the benefits team. **What You'll Do Here:** Plan Operations and Management: + Research, analyze and make best practice recommendations that support the strategic development and implementation of benefit programs, vendors, processes and platforms. + Oversee the management of day-to-day benefit plan operations for all retirement and health and welfare plans totaling approximately $50M; ensure we meet our plan fiduciary responsibilities through the establishing and monitoring of budgets and recommending cost containment strategies. + Develop and execute administrative processes required to support the delivery of 401k and Health & Welfare programs utilizing continuous process improvement. + Audit benefits data on an ongoing basis and work with vendors and Payroll to make corrections, as needed. + Manage and monitor claim costs through plan performance; identify cost issues, make recommendations and escalate, as needed. + Recommend, plan and implement next level benefit programs such as voluntary benefits, executive benefits, discount programs, etc. + Plan and implement annual enrollment activities and communications; manage project plan and work with vendors to implement changes; coordinate wellness events including health fairs, screenings, vaccinations and other wellness-related activities. + Oversight of all leave of absence, disability and compliance-related programs including short- and long-term disability; FMLA; parental, personal and military leaves; ADA; workers compensation; and ergonomics. Vendor Relationship Management + Develop a partnership type of relationship with vendors to optimize the cooperation between the company and the vendor; + Ensure vendors deliver timely, targeted, and cost-efficient benefits programs; + Manage consultants and vendors to optimal productivity and adherence to established SLAs; + Work with vendors to ensure correct account/plan structures and manage self-billing process.Ensure timely and accurate payment and tracking of all health & welfare premiums, fees and claims; + Tap vendors for leading edge ideas on next generation benefit offerings to maintain the best benefit package to attract and retain talent. Communications and Education + Create and/or maintain accurate plan information, materials and tools + Maintain benefits information on intranet sites, company and vendor sites; + Communicate benefit programs clearly and concisely; translate complex data and/or benefits information into easily understood terms + Contribute to employees understanding of benefit programs by developing communication materials and conducting employee meetings, as needed + Educate HR community regarding benefit programs + Leverage technology to enhance and simplify the employee experience. Compliance + Ensure compliance with all benefit programs in accordance with federal, state and location-specific regulatory and legislative requirements including but not limited to PPACA, HIPAA, ERISA, COBRA etc. + Partner with internal and external counsel to provide data for any escalated employee issues or updates on compliance documents. + Ensure IRS, DOL and other government reporting/filing and discrimination testing requirements are executed in a timely manner (i.e. 401K and FSA discrimination testing, 5500s, SPDs, SARs, etc.) + Orchestrate a smooth 401(k) audit process from kick-off to document gathering to concluding interviews and walk-throughs to finalizing and filing the appropriate forms; partner with finance, as needed. + Coordinate PPACA Compliance from PCORI to 1094/1095 reporting to MEC/ALE with tracking, reporting and filing and payments. People Management + Evaluate team workload and recommend staffing needs as appropriate.Utilizing company resources, select, hire, train and retain team members with the requisite skills to successfully execute the goals of the team in support of the Companys objectives. + Create a high-performance, challenging team environment which provides a culture of accountability for results, two-way communication, recognition for successful outcomes and which contributes to the achievement of the Companys objectives. + Establish clear goals and objectives for the team, support ongoing team learning and development, provide ongoing coaching and feedback. **Skills You Will Need Here:** + Bachelors degree required in human resources, business or related field required; Masters degree and relevant professional/technical certification preferred + 10+ years progressive benefits experience managing large group health, welfare and retirement programs + Extensive experience in the design and implementation of health, welfare and retirement benefit programs + Ability to think strategically, aligning benefit programs with business objectives with an ability to draw conclusions, themes and trends from data analysis + Strong presentation skills, comfortable presenting to a C-Suite audience as well as other groups of all types and sizes + In depth knowledge of retirement plan regulations and administration is required + Knowledge of benefits administration regulations including ERISA, HIPAA, PPACA, COBRA, FMLA, Workers Compensation, ADA etc. + Able to develop a trusted advisory relationship with HR, employees and managers through effective communication and efficient, quality execution of projects and tasks + Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong customer/client orientation ability to facilitate discussions to resolve issues and obtain consensus + Strong leadership qualities and skills with the ability to inspire and motivate staff. Proven ability to lead by sharing a common vision, gaining buy-in, building trust and coaching.
