The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a seasoned development professional to provide major gift leadership and support to implement an ambulatory cancer building campaign at UAB.  In addition this person will help develop a grateful patient program to focus on cancer service line priorities of the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center and in support of the new cancer building.   The Director of Development will provide critical input to the strategy, direction, coordination and management of major gifts and stewardship. 

The Director of Development will work closely with the Sr. Director of Development for Cancer to create and implement a strategic plan for a building campaign, and secure major gifts by identifying, cultivating and soliciting individuals, corporations and foundations.  

The Director of Development must be self-motivated and able to function as an integral part of a team of development professionals in designing and implementing successful initiatives to fund a building campaign and maximize philanthropic support of the cancer service line priorities. 

Responsible Includes: 

  • Provide critical input to the design and implementation of a successful ambulatory cancer building campaign through major gifts to maximize philanthropic support.
  • Provide critical input to the design and implementation of a grateful patient program to support the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center service line priorities. 
  • Work with the Senior Development Director for Cancer and faculty to identify potential sources of private gift support and develop appropriate strategies to generate major gifts.
  • Maintain a productive portfolio and meet assigned productivity metrics related, but not limited to, visits, proposals presented and closed, and any monetary goals. Make discovery and cultivation visits with constituents and document document the results of those discussions. Where appropriate, arrange for meetings between these constituents and the CEO of UAB Health System and Director of the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Plan and implement programs that inform and cultivate individuals, corporations and foundations, and coordinate gift solicitation.
  • Work with other members of the University Advancement Office staff to ensure prospects are properly researched and assigned, coordinated and completed, and that donors receive appropriate acknowledgments and recognition.
  • Coordinate the production of appropriate fund raising materials including, but not limited to, case statements, brochures, solicitation letters, gift proposals, gift agreements, thank you letters, donor reports, campaign status reports, etc.
  • Prepare budgets for development and membership activities, obtain necessary administrative approvals, and provide periodic progress reports to appropriate offices.

Annual Salary Range: $72,500 - $85,000 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)


Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Finance, Marketing or a related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible fund raising experience, preferably in a higher education setting; public affairs, outside sales or similar experience may substitute for up to three years of fundraising experience.
