Job Summary:

Works collaboratively with leadership and users on projects. Responsible for the development and/or assisting in programming, costing, planning and managing design on projects. The Design Manager will coordinate and oversee the development of project scopes, programs and the execution of design ideas for new construction, interior space renovations, sustainability initiatives. This person will direct outside consultants to ensure that they are adhering to design standards and the overall design intent developed with Center for Design and the Chief Design Officer. They must be able to bring an innovative and collaborative approach to project design oversight and the management of renovation projects whilst applying knowledge of architectural design, detailing, construction procedures, codes and materials. Effective liaison with both the Florida COO his team as well as Cleveland Clinic Center for Design (CFD) will be key to the successful execution of the role. They may consult with clients from all levels of Cleveland Clinic staff to support the development of concepts for clinical, administrative, educational, and research areas. The Design Manager shall help manage strategic space relationships and assignments at various campus locations and work closely with CFD, including the Art Program, to ensure the Cleveland Clinic function, philosophy and aesthetic is carried consistently throughout our hospitals. The Design Manager will work as the primary client/owner liaison to bring the scope of work and design to completion. The Design Manager will report to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s COO generally, in close liaison with CFD and the Chief Design Officer who will provide direction on Art, Design, Space and Sustainability.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads coordination of design vision and design documentation for review and presentation to internal and external teams.
  • Assists in the development and execution of design ideas for new construction projects and interior space renovations, including programming, planning, design and costing.
  • Collaborates and interfaces with users, including specific departmental designated staff, the Florida team and key members of the Center for Design team in Cleveland.
  • Coordinates design ideas for projects between external consultants and key internal stakeholders and oversees external architects and interior designers through development of designs.
  • Assesses existing facility and space allocations/relationships to develop and establish new functional space relationships
  • Creates drawings and presentations that support the design intentions across the enterprise, to ensure the integration of ideas into overall design
  • Reviews architectural and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with design specifications and adherence to design standards
  • Develops and implements environmental sustainability objectives for new design and construction
  • Researches corporate art collections, develops guidelines, and manages users and art consultants in the implementation of these guideline
  • Participates in the preparation of new construction and renovation project costs in collaboration with construction representatives
  • Creates presentations and graphics for mock-ups for internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepares and presents presentations of information including projects, design standards, trends and special studies to various individuals and groups within and outside Cleveland Clinic
  • Researches and selects appropriate fixtures and finishes to meet the design standards and budget of assigned projects
  • Assists in managing space relationships and assignments
  • Experience of working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential, with a strong sense of project ownership
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Art/Design or other directly applicable field of study
    • Master’s degree preferred

      Languages:

      • English, primary
      • Spanish , not required but beneficial

        Certifications:

        • License in architecture (Florida and/or Ohio) preferred
        • LEED certification preferred but not required
        • EDAC certification, not required

          Competencies (Complexity of Work):

          • Ability to conceptualize space, understand operations and work flow, and analyze multi-dimensional problems to form design recommendations
          • Knowledge of design principles and aesthetics in healthcare
          • Knowledge of space planning
          • Knowledge of furnishings, finishes and equipment
          • Familiar with the concepts of furniture layout
          • Sketching, rendering, and interior architecture detailing skills
          • Working knowledge of CDs and procedures
          • Working knowledge of building systems, codes and ADA requirements
          • Working knowledge of FGI Guidelines
          • Working knowledge of the application of color, materials and aesthetic form
          • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape,  Adobe Creative Suite
          • Proficient in MS Office Suite programs, Work, PowerPoint, Excel
          • Understands graphic art principles
          • Familiarity with project management methodology and tools is a plus
          • Strong time management skills, ability to stay calm under pressure when juggling multiple tasks, effectively prioritizing and executing tasks
          • Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills
          • Intellectual curiosity, creativity and accuracy

            Work Experience:

            • 5+ years experience in designing and/or managing design projects
            • 5+ years experience of building design, expansion and/or remodeling experience
            • Experience with or reasonable knowledge of healthcare facility planning and design preferred

              Physical Requirements:

              • Normal or corrected vision, manual dexterity sufficient to perform majority of work using a PC
              • Ability to visit active construction project sites and navigate over obstacles and to walk for extended periods of time
              • Ability to sit for long durations
              • Occasional lifting of 5 to 15 pounds
