Position Summary

The Chair of the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, & Cultures is responsible for leadership in the academic department, teaching, research and service. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. The position is tenured or tenure track (depending on eligibility) and a twelve-month appointment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Department houses bachelor degree programs in Chinese, French, Spanish, and Linguistics, as well as a minor in German and introductory and intermediate courses in Japanese. The department also houses a masters degree program in Spanish and an Intensive English Program. The department is positioned within a college with opportunities for service learning, study abroad, interdisciplinary teaching and research, undergraduate research. Responsibilities include teaching and administering a department of more than 20 faculty members engaged in languages, linguistics, and intensive English instruction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Native- or near-native ability in Spanish, French, or Chinese is required, as is college-level teaching experience in one of these languages or TESOL/TESL/TEFL. The candidate will also possess the expertise and experience necessary to coordinate and communicate effectively with the various research and specialty areas within the department, which include: 1) Language Pedagogy; 2) Linguistics (Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL/TESL/TEFL, and Second Language Acquisition); and 3) Literature, Cultural, and Civilization Studies.

Required Education and/or Experience

The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. in French, Spanish, Chinese, or Linguistics (with a specialization in any area of these disciplines), a commitment to teaching and scholarship, and demonstrated experience in administration at the department level or above. Founded in 1907, UCA has an enrollment of more than 11,000, of which approximately 1,800 are graduate students. The university offers more than 90 undergraduate and 60 graduate certificate and degree programs, including seven doctoral programs. The student body consistently scores above the national average on the ACT exam.
