Job description
We are looking for a data privacy lawyer who will (1) support our in-house legal team for 50% of the time on data privacy issues, and (2) work within the data privacy team in our compliance department for 50% of the time. The role of the in-house legal team at PwC is just like any other in-house legal team in a large UK head quartered corporate. The team advises PwC on legal matters arising in its business including litigation, contracts with clients and
suppliers and M&A work. The in-house team includes around 50 individuals. The head of the in-house legal team is Alison Statham who is an Executive Board member. The compliance department looks after a range of issues including data privacy and information management.
matters. The individual will also need to be able to draft, review and negotiate data protection provisions in contracts, including GDPR compliant contracts.
We have an unmatched client base in the UK in terms of breadth and quality and our services range from audit, through more traditional professional services to new and innovative offerings using all forms of technology from analytics, through AI, to blockchain and beyond. All of these services have data privacy issues which are ever changing in the current world. This lawyer will be at the heart of those issues, advising internal clients at all levels of how the firm can best navigate them.
Within our compliance team this individual will report to the current Data Protection Officer (DPO) and will assist him in all aspects of his role as DPO. The individual appointed to this role will take a key role in advising the firm on its processes and procedures to collect, store and process personal data which will involve investigating legal issues, embedding policies, and formulating legal views about potential problems and the impact of regulatory guidance, enforcement actions and case law. The individual will also be involved in providing legal assistance and guidance in responding to data breach incidents. The recent pandemic has given rise to a range of data issues which this team has been called on to advise on from apps for staff, to retention of temperature readings and beyond. This is an important and evolving area for the firm and this team is at the heart of that.
This position is primarily UK focussed, however PwC LLP is part of the global network of PwC member firms and there will undoubtedly be an international feature to some of the work. We are flexible about where this role is based within the UK although the majority of the legal and data protection teams are based in London.
Requirements;
- Solicitor with a detailed knowledge of English Law, approx. 5 - 7 years Post Qualification Experience (or equivalent), time spent working in-house an advantage but not a requirement.
- Deep technical professional knowledge in data protection.
- Deep knowledge and experience with UK and EU data protection law and regulatory guidance.
- Ability to formulate opinions and advice on matters relating to data privacy using sound judgment to ensure that the firm’s best interests are served.
- Ability to tailor advice to the specific needs of the business and apply common sense and practical solutions.
- Ability to adapt to change and to be open minded and innovative in their thinking.
- Good legal drafting skills.
- Sound, confident judgement and well developed influencing skills.
- An ability to build strong relationships and become a trusted advisor to the business.
