The Enterprise Reporting and Analytics (ERA) team within UW-IT enables the University of Washington data user community to access and use institutional information in support of data-driven decision-making.  The data analytics team within ERA is tasked with conducting advanced analytics to enable the University to make informed decisions by using data.

ERA is currently seeking a Data Engineer in support of the implementation of advanced data analytics capabilities. As a Data Engineer you will focus on the design, implementation, and operation of data management systems to meet the UW's business needs. This includes designing how the data will be stored, consumed, integrated, and managed by different data entities and digital systems using Azure architecture. This position will work together with data consumers to determine, create, and populate optimal data architectures, structures, and systems.  Additional responsibilities include developing prototypes and proof of concepts for the selected solutions, and implementing complex data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing and visualizing large sets of data using multiple platforms.

Additionally, this role will play a key role in implementing backend database technologies, their configuration and utilization, and the optimization of the full data pipeline infrastructure to support the actual content, volume, and periodicity of data to support the intended kinds of queries and analysis to match expected responsiveness.

This role will ensure that data pipelines are scalable, repeatable, and secure, and can serve multiple users within the organization; help facilitate getting data from a variety of different sources, getting it in the right formats, assuring that it adhere to data quality standards. In addition, this role is responsible for the infrastructure that provides insight from raw data and handles diverse sources of data seamlessly. Additional responsibilities include developing prototypes and proof of concepts for the selected solutions, and implementing complex data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing and visualizing large sets of data using multiple platforms; understand how to apply technologies to solve big data problems and to develop innovative big data solutions.


  • Bachelors Degree Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or an equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience with data warehouse technical architectures, ETL/ ELT, reporting/analytic tools and, scripting
  • Experience building data solutions using C# and/or Python
  • Experience writing scripts using MS Powershell
  • Experience writing complex SQL queries (clean and transform data)
  • Experience using advanced software and system design skills in an environment using Microsoft Azure (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Data Warehouse) and graph database, cluster data processing technologies such as Databricks
  • Experienced in designing Reporting Data models for seamless cross-functional and cross-systems data reporting and analysis
  • Experienced in visualizing data using software such as: Excel/Tableau/D3
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.   


  • Agile development process experience or Scrum Master experience
  • Experience with Snowflake (elastic datawarehouse)
  • Working knowledge or experience with graph databases
  • Experience in machine learning
  • Comfortable and effective in presenting to large audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to document, measure, and improve business processes
  • Understanding of business process mapping and re-engineering
  • Ability to think analytically and possesses a familiarity with quantitative measurement
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Comfortable with rapidly changing priorities
  • Proactive communicator
