    While specific duties will vary by industry, customer service representatives will interact directly with an organizations customer base. From handling questions and complaints, taking and processing orders, as well as supporting an organizations products and services, customer service representatives will often be one of the first lines of communication from company to consumer. Entry-level education requirements such as a high school diploma or its equivalent is usually needed for these types of positions, however, there is no work related experience needed to secure a job for this industry. An exception that would require a customer service representative to obtain a license or certification would be industries such as insurance or finance, where the employer or organization may provide training or other resources needed to obtain these.

    According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Customer Service Representatives will grow 10 precent from 2014 to 2024. This is faster than average for all occupations. In May 2015, the median hourly wage for this occupation was $15.25, with the lower ten percent earned less than $9.74, while the higher ten percent earned more than $25.49 an hour. Customer Service Representatives typically work full-time, with only 1 in 5 working part-time. Hours will vary based on an organizations needs, with many needing workers that are available on weekends and for night shifts. Job prospects in this industry are favroable due to the constant need to replace workers who leave the industry.
