Job Description

The IDEA Center at the University of Notre Dame is looking for a Customer Insights Manager.

What is a Customer Insights Manager? We need a person who can find customers, understand their needs and jobs, and test value propositions. How do we do that? In a lot of different ways! Customer interviews, surveys, user testing tools, and we are always building more.
So, what is the IDEA Center?
We help the faculty inventors create companies using the technology theyve created. We have a few teams that help with this: one that understands and documents the risks of creating a company with a specific technology, a couple of teams that test the market of the technology to mitigate those risks, and teams that help form and grow the company.
You fit right in the middle! The biggest risk with any new company is that you arent solving a problem that people want solved. We need you to figure out if we are solving a real problem, or if we just created New Coke.

Heres what I need, I need someone who understands that new products arent successful because they are a cool piece of technology. I need someone who knows that the foundation for building a good product is the benefit it can bring the customer.
Who is the customer? Whats the benefit? Who else is important in making the decision? Whats the benefit to them? How do you know that that benefit is enough to get people to open their wallets?
Can you ask all those questions? What did I forget? Do you know why those questions are important?
Do you think you could do it for medical devices? How about diagnostics? Sensors? Machine learning? Consumer products?
Do you think you could teach student analysts to do it?
Who are you?
Im hoping you are someone with a high EQ who can understand and empathize with different types of people. I need someone who can bring their human research experience and techniques, and help me apply them to starting new companies. You need to be adaptable, flexible, and cooperative. We move fast here and need someone who can keep up. If you had some design, or UI/UX experience or flair, that would be a huge bonus. You need to be entrepreneurial-minded, our vision is to be the best in our class at commercializing technology while making the world a better place.

This position is listed as a limited term position. It is currently funded for 5 years, with the intention of making the position permanent.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors in a human research field like: Anthropology, Psychology, Industrial Design, Ethnography, etc.
MBA focused on Marketing Research, or Masters of Market Research.
UI/UX Certification or experience.
