Job summary
The Construction Sustainability Principal is a new role in the Americas Construction team. You will be responsible for driving sustainable construction processes and programs across our build teams in North and South America. You will lead sustainable design and construction coordination and be the sustainable construction subject-matter expert in green building and construction decarbonization supporting Amazon€™s Climate Pledge and sustainability goals including reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The successful candidate will have strong experience with LEED, experience with driving programs and processes in construction sustainability, and be familiar with a wide range of green building standards.

Our data centers are industry-leading examples of energy efficient, cost effective designs. The Data Center Construction team is responsible for the construction management of all disciplines including civil, electrical, mechanical, controls, and architectural related to the construction of the data center. The Senior Manager of Construction will also be used as a resource in their specific discipline and support the team delivering efficient and sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems.

The Construction Sustainability Principal will be responsible to:

  • Partner with the North and South America Design, Build, and Operations teams to incorporate construction sustainability objectives into data center designs and construction projects.
  • Create and manage the construction sustainability strategy and partner with internal stakeholders to socialize and embed sustainability goals and targets.
  • Build tools and resources that help design and construction teams streamline implementation of Amazon€™s sustainability strategy.
  • Research and test new technologies that improve the sustainability of AWS data center construction.
  • Report progress of sustainability goals to teams and leadership and track industry standards and emerging trends to drive long-term strategy.
  • Manage construction sustainability consultants.
  • Up to 25% travel.
  • Work location: This position is available in Herndon, VA; Arlington, VA; Austin, TX; Denver, CO; Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Phoenix, AZ; and Seattle, WA.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor€™s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or an equivalent engineering/architectural science OR 4+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 10+ years of technical experience managing construction sustainability programs with an emphasis on the environment, decarbonization, carbon accounting, carbon footprint analysis. Experience will include technical experience with LEED and principles of sustainability, zero waste, water, zero emission construction equipment, sourcing low carbon materials, and embodied and job site carbon reduction.
  • 10+ years experience leading and developing programs, projects, and processes aligned with large corporate goals through influence, cross-functional collaboration, and clear communication. Example include working with 3rd party consultants, internal owner teams, and regulatory agencies.
  • 5+ years implementing new technology, materials, and processes leading to carbon reduction during the construction process.
  • 5+ years of construction experience including managing construction projects in the field and construction vendor/general contractor management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master€™s Degree in Engineering, Construction, or equivalent.
  • LEED Accredited Professional, Building Design & Construction and/or Operations & Maintenance.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA).
  • Experience with Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and other carbon certifications and standards such as Global Warming Potential (GWP).
  • Experience directly related to the design, operation, or construction of data centers. Knowledge and experience with large scale power systems.
  • Experience developing and leading the evaluation and selection (request for proposals) of contractors for construction.
  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively across large, complex organizations.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Understand electrical engineering best practices including power, breaker coordination studies, switch gear sequence of operation, and NEC code.
  • Understand mechanical engineering systems such as HVAC and air handling.
  • Able to read and interpret construction related drawings for all disciplines.
  • Ability to define data center system-level architecture, specify/document performance and equipment requirements, create/communicate conceptual designs, and create/maintain project documentation.
  • Ability and willingness to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs and duration with no impact on quality and reliability.
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon€™s leadership principles requirements for this role
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon€™s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role
