Community Relations Manager

The West Michigan Whitecaps are seeking a high-energy, positive, and experienced Community Relations Manager. This position is among the principal ambassadors for the Whitecaps organization with responsibilities for delivering our mission and vision throughout West Michigan. The Community Relations Manager is responsible for managing the Whitecaps Community Foundation, developing public relations strategies, managing key relationships in communities surrounding our organization, and is an integral part of the marketing department. This position reports to the Director of Marketing & Media Relations. Performs all job tasks in compliance with the philosophy, policies, goals, and budget of Whitecaps Professional Baseball, Inc.

  • Develop and execute strategies for community outreach, employee volunteerism, and business relationship building.

  • Develop, execute, and/or assist in fundraising events benefiting the Whitecaps Community Foundation such as fundraising auctions, Whitecaps Winter Banquet, Annual Golf Outing, Youth Baseball Clinics, Inner City Youth Baseball & Softball League All Star Game.

  • Manages and assists in 50/50 Raffles throughout the baseball season raising funds for non-profits and the Whitecaps Community Foundation. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, training of volunteers for the raffles, transactional tasks, and documentation.

  • Schedule and assist in player and mascot appearances for schools, hospitals, non-profits, festivals, parades, etc.

  • Management responsibilities include recruiting, hiring, training, and managing the Whitecaps Street Team, and Community Relations intern position.

  • Works closely with baseball operations regarding Whitecaps player appearances, host family housing for players, and language classes.

  • Implements community relations and external communications campaigns, including the development of strategic communications materials (press releases, Q&As, talking points, media training, Whitecaps Community Foundation articles, social media posts, etc.)

  • Organizes and manages tours of Fifth Third Ballpark.

  • Builds and manages relationships with key community partners such as the YMCA, Inner City Youth Baseball & Softball League, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Fifth Third Bank, and others.

  • Delivers recaps to assess progress against goals, outlining measurable results and key insights for short-term and long-term community relations efforts.        

  • Assist with organizing local events, attending community meetings, and creating programs for community outreach.

  • Provides regular updates to Whitecaps staff regarding upcoming Community Relations events and volunteer opportunities.                                                                            

  • Works with Director of Marketing to develop and manage a departmental and Foundation budget, reporting results monthly.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining Whitecaps corporate image and identity.        Other duties as assigned, including putting on and taking off field tarp, facility event setup, etc.


  • 5+ years of experience in community and/or external corporate/sports communications, foundation development, management.

  • BA degree in Public Relations, Marketing, or related field.

  • Experience with community relations strategy development, and implementation.

  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Must be adept at working across departments internally and maintaining internal working relationships.

  • Media relations experience- especially in cultivating relationships with local media.

  • Experience managing direct reports and/or managing working teams, interns.


  • Bi-lingual speaking skills (Spanish/English).

  • Experience working with senior executives to develop and implement strategic external communications initiatives

Technical Capabilities & Department Specific Accountabilities

Proficient in Excel, Outlook 365 or equivalent, social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram.


Work Environment (e.g., office, field, travel, etc.)                   

Office and baseball stadium.  Staff must be located to meet visitors, fans, or take calls as well as able to travel through the community for various appearances. Position requires weekend and evening hours. Must assist in sending and receiving large boxes.
