The Clinic Physical Therapy Assistant works under the administrative direction of a licensed physical therapist in the practice of physical therapy. The Clinic Physical Therapy Assistant contributes to physical therapist's effectiveness by identifying patient care issues; providing information and commentary; recommending options and courses of action; implementing physical therapy directives.



  • Carries out patient care programs or portions thereof as planned and directed by the Physical Therapist.
  • Assesses patient health by interviewing patients; performing physical examinations; obtaining, updating, and studying therapy histories.
  • Assesses abnormal conditions by reviewing physical therapist's interpretations of patient evaluations and test results.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures by administering manual exercises; instructing, encouraging, and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily-living activities; and in using supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses.
  • Instructs and counsels patients by describing therapeutic regimens; giving normal growth and development information; promoting wellness and health maintenance.
  • Provides continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans.
  • Accepts responsibility for patients personal care and environment throughout the treatment.
  • Attends appropriate patient care panels/rounds, conferences and/or meetings pertaining to assigned patient.
  • Follows established procedures and observes safety precautions in the application and the use of heat, cold, light, water, sound, massage, and electrical stimulation.
  • Carries out treatments utilizing special equipment.
  • Ensures that all progress notes are reviewed by the supervising physical therapist.
  • Meets department patient care productivity standards.
  • May perform wound care, wound debridement per physician order, under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
  • Participates in clerical and reception activities when necessary.
  • Submits charge tickets to reflect time spent with patients seen each day.
  • Compiles with procedures for maintenance of departmental supplies and equipment.
  • Respect for patients right to participate in plan of care
  • Acts for the well being of the patients and the members of the Hospital community and provides fair and equitable care in accordance with the law
  • Deals effectively and respectfully with a diverse cultural and ethnic mix of patients, visitors and staff
  • Attends all mandatory in-services, applicable unit/hospital in-services and fulfills continuing education requirements. Participates in unit and/or hospital committees.
  • Maintains legal and accreditation compliance by adhering to policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations, and Joint Commission standards; anticipating emerging issues.



Education Background

Satisfactory completion of college/university training program for physical therapy assistants.


Licensure, Registration, Certification

Current WA State PTA license required. 


Special Training/Skills

Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit/department.


Work Experience

Previous experience as a PTA or Physical Therapy Aide preferred.


Physical Abilities

Ability to transfer and transport patients safely using proper body mechanics.  May ambulate as much as four miles/day. 


Physical Demand Level:  Heavy

In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-

Lift / Carry

50 to 100 pounds occasionally

25 to 50 pounds frequently

10 to 20 pounds constantly


As required, must be able to-

Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders

Push and Pull

Perform fine motor functions

Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
