Job Description

When you’re part of the team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you’ll do important work, like helping customers in finding cures for cancer, protecting the environment or making sure our food is safe. Your work will have real-world impact, and you’ll be supported in achieving your career goals.

How will you make an impact?
This scientist will develop next-generation solutions and integrated applications using a wide array of Thermo Fisher Scientific products to support modeling disease for drug discovery. This work will support four principal activities: to develop new tools and solutions pertaining to drug discovery, to exemplify how to use our tools to ask broad scientific questions, to participate in external collaborations and to create customized solutions for our clients. The scientist will be expected to both lead projects independently and to support senior scientists in a highly collaborative team environment.

Projects may include, but not be limited to, molecular biology, cell line engineering, virus generation, three-dimensional cell culture, high-throughput or high-content assay development, reprogramming of adult somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), genomic editing of iPSCs or differentiation of iPSCs. A central focus will be on generating cell-based assays that accurately model the patho-physiological state of a disease. These projects may be driven by internal project design or by external collaborations.

What will you do?
The successful individual will directly interact with senior R&D staff, project management and external collaborators to understand or develop workplans. The scientist will then be responsible for executing these plans either independently or as part of a team in order to meet agreed upon deliverables and timelines. These activities will require a certain level of independence but may also be in support of senior scientists.

This role will involve the following tasks:

  • Stem cell culture (maintenance and differentiation)
  • Tissue culture (culture of many cell types, 2D and 3D)
  • Stable cell line generation (transfection and antibiotic-selection)
  • Flow cytometry/cell sorting (instrument use and data analysis)
  • Assay development (differentiation, high-throughput and high-content)
  • Molecular biology (Microarray and TaqMan® PCR)
  • Genomic editing (TALN and CRISPR based editing)
  • Periodic weekend work (stem cell culture)
  • This individual will also be expected to support and participate in senior level R&D meetings.

How will you get here?

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of industry experience or a master’s degree in the life sciences.
  • Requires 1-5 years' experience with:
    • Stem cell culture
    • Tissue culture
    • Assay development
    • Molecular biology techniques (DNA.RNA/protein)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Perform standard laboratory math calculations and solutions/media preparation
  • Sterile tissue culture technique
  • Assay development (particularly fluorescence and luminescence based assays)
  • Expertise with stem cell culture and differentiation
  • Independent project execution
  • Observe deviations from the expected outcomes and provide solutions where needed
  • Succeed with a moderate level of supervision and guidance
  • Strong teamwork orientation with demonstrable influence/interpersonal skills
