As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem solving skills and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a Great College to Work For for six consecutive years.

UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UWs IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the University community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.

Academic Services (AS) is the division of UW-IT that develops and supports enterprise academic and student administrative systems.  The Student Information System (SIS) Program, in turn, has responsibility for systems that directly support the entire student lifecycle - including admissions, academic planning, registration, financial aid, and student accounts - as well as those that enable it, such as curriculum management.  The SIS Program engages the UW community in visioning a technology enabled future that supports the broader goals of the university. We are currently seeking a Business Analyst with project management experience to support our efforts to modernize these systems.

The incumbent will conduct and direct analysis efforts, planning, designing and testing on one or two work streams within a diverse team environment that includes representatives from a broad range of campus and administrative units.

Due to the level of ambiguity and complexity of requirements, the incumbent must have strong intellectual curiosity and the ability to constructively question and influence thought partners across functional areas and end-user audiences.

Due to the number of diverse stakeholders and the matrixed organization structure, the incumbent must be able to communicate complex processes, problems, and solutions in a simple, compelling, accurate, and highly visual manner for all levels of the organization.

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or similar degree.

  • Four years of experience doing progressively more complex business analysis within a project or program environment such as scope definition, requirements gathering, business process re-engineering, etc.

  • In depth understanding and working knowledge of various software development and service management methodologies/concepts  (e.g. Agile, Kanban, ITIL, Waterfall).

  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of research and analysis techniques, ideally including a mix of both quantitative and qualitative methods for understanding and documenting end-user and business owner requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform data analysis, including querying standard databases using SQL.

  • Self-starter and able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a cooperative effort.

  • Ability to deal with trade-offs, conflict, and change management in a collaborative and positive manner.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Recent experience with at least one programming language.

  • Experience in a major Higher Education institution, preferably the University of Washington, especially with regard to the Student Journey and/or Student Information Systems and/or Student Administration.

  • Relevant coursework in business analysis, business requirement documentation, standards-based modeling technologies, or quality assurance.

Ongoing employment will be dependent on performance, as well as availability of funds.

This position contributes in a collaborative team work environment.

Collaboration is supported through a shared space working environment, ad hoc meetings focused on problem-solving, and the use of a variety of communication tools. Responsibility to work varied hours as needed to meet project deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which others activities depend. Expectation to go over and above as necessary to achieve agreed upon goals and outcomes within the student program. Daily interactions with other team members, subject matter experts and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

    Application Process:
The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.  These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others.  Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select Apply to this position.
