Position Summary

The University of Central Arkansas Department of Art invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Art Education for a tenure-track appointment to begin August 2020.

The Department of Art in UCAs College of Fine Arts and Communication (soon to be the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences) offers the BFA in Studio Art with emphases in ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture and the BA in Art with emphases in art history, art education, and fine art. The Department has over 200 Art majors and thirteen full-time and eight part-time faculty; the Baum Gallery and the Black Box Student Gallery; an active visiting artist program; and endowed scholarship funds of over two million dollars.

The Department will be moving into the soon-to-be constructed Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts with an expected completion date of fall 2022. The Windgate Center will contain the Departments studios, offices, lecture spaces, a music performance hall, and a Black Box Theatre. The University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching a three/three load consisting of Art Education and Studio or Art History foundation courses based on relevant experience and department needs; working with mentors in the field to supervise student teachers; other duties include advising, committee work, and service. Candidates are expected to be active in the profession and in appropriate professional organizations. The candidate selected for this position will work closely with the current Art Education professor and the College of Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required Education and/or Experience

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Art Education; consideration also given to Ph.D. or Ed.D. in closely related field; a minimum of three years of experience teaching Art in K-12 public schools; and a professionally active record of achievement.

Preferred Education and/or Experience

Desired qualifications include experience teaching at the university level. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.

Founded in 1907, UCA has an enrollment of approximately 11,500, of which more than 1,800 are graduate students. The university offers 91 undergraduate and 59 graduate certificate and degree programs, including seven doctoral programs. The student body consistently scores above the national average on the ACT exam. UCA is proud of its tradition of teaching excellence and its contributions in scholarship and creative activities. The campus is widely acclaimed for its beauty. UCA is located in Conway, Arkansas, a thriving city of approximately 65,000 in central Arkansas, and thirty minutes from Little Rock.
