Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an Archaeologist III for full-time permanent employment in the Portland, OR office. An Archaeologist III is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program in the Pacific Northwest, with responsibility for successfully winning and executing projects, and leading all aspects of project implementation.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position that will report to the Cultural Resources Program Manager. The Archaeologist may serve as a Field Director or Principal Investigator, based on work experience and education. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading fieldwork (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping.

  • Gathers data and other information to be used in the preparation of environmental reports.

  • Works under supervision of senior staff but is capable of completing all but the most complex tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Supervise personnel in the field, office, and laboratory, as needed.

  • Assist with project management and author proposal scopes and budgets.

  • Providing specialist technical advice on cultural resource management to clients.

  • Liaise and develop positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders

  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act, and Oregon and Washington cultural resources rules and regulations.

  • Ability to organize data in an efficient and clear manner.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and communicate priorities to manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field required, + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout the Pacific Northwest.

  • Current valid drivers license and U.S. government issued identification required.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the field or in the office.

  • Meets the Secretary of Interiors professional qualification standards in Archaeology and the State of Oregon definition of a Qualified Archaeologist (ORS 390.235).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree or PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field required.

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.

  • Experience with implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

  • Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis; osteology; historical archaeology).

  • Demonstration of excellent technical writing skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience managing cultural resources management projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.

  • Experience with tribal consultation.

  • Experience supervising large crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.

  • Proficiency in the use of Trimble and tablets for GPS data collection, as well as ArcGIS software.

  • Has worked on an interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.

  • Works well in a team environment.
