The UW Tacoma Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Officer will provide and facilitate programming, communications and relationship cultivation to significantly broaden stakeholder engagement and increase philanthropic support of 23,000+ and growing University of Washington Tacoma alumni. By creatively and strategically enabling alumni to further identify with the Husky brand and maintain meaningful, lasting relationships with each other, with the UW Alumni Association, and with UW Tacoma, this person will assist alumni in the development of their personal, professional, volunteer, and philanthropic interests. These deepened relationships will assist UW Tacoma in continuing to innovatively build and grow systems of sustainable alumni and annual giving support for Schools, programs and initiatives, faculty and students.

The Officer will increase the number of engaged UW Tacoma alumni, ultimately growing the numbers of alumni giving annual gifts and steadily growing their UW and UW Tacoma investments. Not only will the Officer seek to secure annual Presidents Circle level contributions (mostly gifts of $2,000 and above) and increase numbers and amounts of alumni gifts at all levels, they will also seek to grow other areas of engagement including general, alumni/academic and unit-specific event attendance, UW Tacoma community involvement and advocacy, and social media/electronic networks and communications.

Such responsibilities will involve the following tasks and measures:
  • Work with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement, Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Development Officers to build a culture of philanthropy amongst alumni through identifying, cultivating, and stewarding major donor prospects from the alumni pool, and by encouraging consistent annual giving at all levels
  • Work collaboratively with Development Officers and academic leaders to manage major donor alumni prospects smartly, strategically, and sensitively
  • Continue to identify, recruit, manage and activate UW Tacoma alumni leadership and volunteers in ways and structures (i.e. UW Tacoma Alumni Council) conducive to growing School/unit-based as well as campus and community-wide alumni connectivity and commitment
  • Continue to explore connections between alumni and students and innovatively harness the power of those connections via formal and informal interactions, events and activities
  • Work as an integrated team with other Advancement colleagues to develop a comprehensive plan for significantly growing alumni and community event participation as well as annual giving (under $25,000) and scholarship donations. This requires a focus on the lower third of the UW Tacoma campaign gift pyramid
  • The Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Officer will strive to continually increase the number of UW Tacoma alumni who are giving annually at the Presidents Circle level and above. In addition, the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Officer will strive to continually increase the average annual gift size of all UW Tacoma alumni. The Officer will build on past achievements in this area and develop a plan with associated outcome-based metrics

    Additional duties of the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Officer include:
  • Represent UW Tacoma at University, community, and professional functions as appropriate
  • Provide assistance to academic leadership (Deans, directors, faculty and administrators) in designing and implementing programs needed to encourage alumni participation, advocacy and financial support for UW Tacoma
  • Serve as the primary liaison between UW Tacoma and the UW Alumni Association staff and volunteers. Engage alumni volunteers and the UW Tacoma Alumni Council in UWAA events and activities
  • With other Advancement colleagues plan and organize alumni and annual giving events and execute them in collaboration, when appropriate, with UWAA (e.g., lecture programs, alumni reunions, and annual donor receptions), etc. Build an annual UW Tacoma calendar of alumni and annual giving events, activities and tasks to be integrated into other UW Tacoma and UW Tacoma Advancement schedules/calendars
  • Develop and execute an annual plan for alumni engagement and annual giving, include short and long term goals and benchmarks/metrics associated with those goals. Improve upon and sustain the regular system of metrics and reporting for monitoring progress and overall performance
  • Create, innovate and develop content, then manage both regular and new fundraising appeals to generate continued and increased alumni and community-based annual giving. This includes Husky Giving Day, the Senior Class Gift program and more
  • Recruit volunteers and cultivate relationships as needed to accomplish program goals and build support for UW Tacoma. Support the seeking and securing of student representation when requested for various purposes (scholarship breakfasts/lunches; represent UW Tacoma at a lunch, etc.).

    This position currently supervises various student interns in addition to providing significant campus-wide programmatic leadership requiring extensive internal relationship building and management.

    The person in this position works collaboratively with a multi-talented Advancement team in a fast-paced work environment juggling multiple deadlines and responsibilities. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement and is an active member of the DASE Team (Development, Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement) which is a viable part of the overall UW Tacoma Advancement Team. The position interacts internally with campus leadership, primarily in the advancement, academic affairs and student affairs areas. The Alumni Relations/Annual Giving Officer must be able to exercise flexibility and discretion in scheduling work to meet demands of the position, occasionally including evenings and weekends.


  • Bachelors degree at least three years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, relationship building, marketing and/or related fields
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Detailed-oriented, organized self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision and as an effective member of a team
  • Proficiency in event planning and volunteer management
  • Experience with project budgets and monitoring expenses and proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and Teams and the Internet Experience with project budgets and monitoring expenses and proficiency
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary

  • Graduate of the University of Washington Tacoma
  • Experience using social media professionally, crowd-funding platforms, and mass marketing platforms (such as MailChimp, Constant Contact and/or Marketo)
  • Demonstrated innovation and success in stakeholder engagement and annual giving appeals/solicitation via strategic marketing and experience with multi-faceted/layered  communications (all forms of mailing; social media; messaging at events, etc.) and creative/responsive audience list segmentation
  • Experience working in a strongly branded environment
