Algorithm Test Engineer

San Diego, CA 92101
Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented engineer/scientist to join our Surgical Intelligence team as an Algorithm Test Engineer, responsible for both software and in-laboratory testing of cutting-edge medical imaging algorithms. You'll tap into your broad experience in scientific software development and laboratory testing to help validate and shape early product ideas, conduct the rigorous testing needed for ready-to-release algorithms, and help maintain and enhance existing products. You're eager to take on the responsibility of ensuring the highest quality of our algorithms, taking user needs, requirements, standards, and patient safety into account. You are a scientist at heart who prefers to be embedded in a multi-disciplinary product development team, able to collaborate with experienced algorithm developers, software teams, and product owners. You love the challenges of shepherding an idea from initial concept to finished software product, equally comfortable with lab/benchtop testing and software product testing. With an eye on continual improvement, you possess a great can-do attitude and openly share ideas on how to improve the process of evolving a prototype algorithm into a robust, successful product.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in a quantitative field such as engineering, computer science, physics, math, or similar

- Experience with thorough performance testing of prototype algorithms, including laboratory and benchtop testing, hardware testing, simulations, and statistical performance testing

- Experience in either Matlab or Python (for algorithm prototyping and testing), and C++ (for production code), with strong experience in proper software testing methods (unit, regression, accuracy)

- Experience with image processing algorithms (such as registration, enhancement, segmentation)

- Collaborative approach with strong communication skills to troubleshoot, plan, and prioritize tasks with an interdisciplinary team

- Experience with and ability to thrive in a fast-paced development environment with evolving priorities and requirements

- Hands-on testing of algorithm performance in a realistic laboratory setting (simulated surgery operating room)

- Collaborate in designing and conducting experiments needed to develop early-stage ideas, including experimental setup, data collection, and compilation of results

- Build and maintain an automated software pipeline to verify algorithm performance as part of an Agile software development process

- Collaborate with Verification & Validation team to support the design, production, and execution of formal algorithm test protocols

- Self-directed investigation to find and diagnose as-yet undiscovered issues, and to expand and improve existing test methods

- Over time, expand role to include assisting with algorithm design and development

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with medical image algorithms for surgical navigation applications (2D/3D spatial navigation, multimodal registration, image enhancement, close-range photogrammetry)

- Familiarity with medical imaging modalities used in surgical applications (X-Ray, CT scan, MRI)

- Experience with medical device verification / validation testing

- Experience with C# and .NET development

- Agile software development methodologies and test-driven development

- Statistical algorithm methods (parameter estimation, detection, performance evaluation)
