JOB TITLE:                           Advocacy Associate


DEPARTMENT:                    Government Advocacy


LOCATION:                          Washington, DC


REPORTS TO:                     Director of Government Advocacy


JOB CLASSIFICATION:      Full-Time; Non-Exempt; Union


 


PURPOSE OF THE JOB:


The Advocacy Associate provides support, including policy and other research, writing and editorial, advocacy, outreach, administrative and logistical to the government advocacy team.


 


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Conduct strategic research and legislative advocacy to support government advocacy team objectives


Track and analyze relevant legislation, media, floor debates, votes, and public events, and monitor hearings


Attend coalition and advocacy meetings as Human Rights Firsts representative


Produce advocacy materials and draft communications


Identify new opportunities for Human Rights First advocacy and participate in the development of organizational positions


Assist in team data collection for evaluation and measuring progress


Provide administrative support to the team including, but not limited to scheduling meetings, organizing hill briefings, planning travel and event logistics, completing expense reports


Collaborate with other members of the advocacy team to draft op-eds and blogs


Draft and compile content for organization website, press, marketing and other collateral materials


Screen and interview internship candidates for the government advocacy team


Collaborate with development team on fundraising efforts related to government advocacy objectives


Liaise with Veterans For American Ideals, communications, and technology staff to advance HRF strategic objectives


Other duties as requested based on team and/or organizational need


 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE:


Bachelors degree in related field and at least 3 years relevant experience or a combination of education and experience, including relevant internships


Familiarity with the structure and function of the U.S. government and/or nongovernmental organizations


Demonstrated writing and proofreading skills, strong attention to detail


Research experience and proficiency in relevant research databases


Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills


Knowledge of the operations and structure of the federal government


  Capacity to take on multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines on assignments and function as an effective member of a team


Solid communication skills


Demonstrated interest in human rights and dedication to Human Rights Firsts mission
