Advanced Products and Prototype Assembly Engineer

Description:

Participate in development of new products as part of the advance program assembly team.  This team is responsible for the assembly of complex Infrared imaging assemblies.  The assemblies incorporate infrared sensor technologies into vacuum dewar assemblies with advanced optics.  The assemblies utilize wire bonding technology, wire welding technology and application of various epoxy technologies all performed within a clean room environment.  The role will also require the ability to work with peers from multiple disciplines to achieve tight production milestones.

Essential Functions:

  • Build initial prototypes, and use knowledge to develop electrical & mechanical product manufacturing processes
  • Generate assembly process flow, engineering specifications and work instructions to define and control manufacturing processes
  • Provide input to product design teams to optimize product designs for manufacturing
  • Develop and implement process control techniques and procedures in the manufacturing environment to optimize product quality, delivery to schedule, flow efficiency and operations cost
  • Lead and participate in process troubleshooting and failure analysis
  • Select, oversee & maintain production equipment
  • Provide process training
  • Coordinate change management needs with internal and external customers for assigned roles
  • Support program teams in transitioning new products to production
  • Identify, design and implement manufacturing fixturing and tooling

    Qualifications:

    • B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology
    • 7 years minimum experience in electronics or mechanical product design or manufacturing preferred (high  complexity, low volume)
    • Experience with the following processes preferred
      • Wire Bonding
      • Wire Weld Technology
      • Soldering processes
      • Laser welding
      • Component attach
      • Solvent and aqueous cleaning
      • Wire/harness assembly
      • Polymerics
      • Working knowledge of optical, vacuum and cryogenic systems desired
      • Experience with measuring microscopes and vision systems desired
      • Strong troubleshooting, creative problem solving, and critical thinking/reasoning skills
      • Project leadership and management experience
      • Clear communicator (listening, speaking, writing)
      • Proficiency in understanding mechanical drawings (including geometric tolerancing), electrical wiring diagrams, and engineering specifications

      • Able to obtain J-STD-001 certifications
      • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, work with little supervision, and adapt to sudden changes in plans
      • Ability to improvise assembly tools and fixtures, especially when quick turnaround of a prototype build is needed
      • Excellent hands-on skills, especially working on small scale items under a microscope, and using hand tools and some machine tools
      • Able to perform miniature assembly work using adhesives, small mechanical fasteners, and hand tools
        • Have the ability to interface with customers, operators, supervisors, mechanical engineering, and quality assurance
        • Familiar with lean manufacturing principles desired
        • Able to obtain a security clearance
