The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Counselor

The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversitys (OMA&D) mission is to create pathways for diverse populations to access post-secondary opportunities, nurture and support their academic success, and cultivate a campus climate that enriches the educational experience for all. Under the supervision of the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the Academic Counselor will provide substantive advising and student services for undergraduates focusing on those who have undeclared academic interests, who are preparing for admission to majors, who are pre-professional students, or who are changing their academic goals. Important aspects of the work include development and holistic counseling, attention to detail, and frequent contact with the Universitys administrative system.

The Academic Counselor for EOP will work with faculty and administrative units to promote and develop strategies and policies related to work with low-income, first-generation students and underrepresented students as well as undergraduate student preparation for department/program acceptance. This position will work with the program director to coordinate and implement successful retention and graduation strategies for students from EOP target populations.

Provide one-on-one developmental advising for a caseload of about 350 EOP undergraduate undeclared student; provide one comprehensive diagnosis and needs assessment necessary to determine the academic, personal, financial, career, and cultural needs of project participants; participation in planning, development, and implementation of programming and activities for students; providing personalized advising and counseling for EOP students in areas of academics, career, financial aid, financial management, personal issues, and graduate/professional school; provide regular, high volume drop-in advising hours; Perform outreach and strengths-based advising to students on their advising caseload who are on warming, probation, or who are not meeting continuation requirements.                                                                                              
Represent EOP in collaborative partnerships on and off-campus; work with program staff to develop innovative programming that fosters the academic, social, and emotional well-being of EOP students and maximizes their opportunities at UW. Maintain liaison relationships with academic departments, administrative offices, and agencies, that provide assistance to participants within and outside the university; collaborate with OMA&D and other university programs focusing on student retention, graduation, and success.                                                         
Maintain complete electronic files for program evaluation purposes, and prepare reports as necessary on assessment, academic progress, program activities, and financial aid. 
Participate in regular meetings with the EOP Director and staff to monitor and evaluate the program; work with the EOP staff to develop new and innovative proposals and performance reports.  
Engage students in research, internship, and leadership opportunities. Promote student preparation for graduate/ professional school opportunities in collaboration with the McNair Program and Early Identification Program. Assist and provide advocacy to students with administrative processes that impact their enrollment at the UW, such as Hardship Withdrawal Petitions, Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress Appeals, or Reinstatement Petitions; provide students with letters of recommendation or support as appropriate.  
Engage with national, regional, and local communities of practice (e.g. NACADA, NASPA, NAEOP, etc.), to enrich aptitude to work with diverse student populations      
Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Communication or related field and a minimum of two years of experience in academic advising or related experience including knowledge of academic degree requirements and curriculum, student services, and community resources; demonstrated history of working with a diverse multicultural student population, which includes working with low income, first-generation, and/or underrepresented populations; strong organizational skills, including strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail, ability to take initiative, work independently, but also be a part of a highly collaborative team; demonstrate an ability to work effectively under pressure in the context of a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and managing a complex, multi-faceted and growing student population.

Masters degree in education, social work, counseling, communication, or a related field is desired. Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university; experience navigating institutional barriers and demonstrated ability to be an effective advocate for diverse students; understanding of the complexities of identity formation and intersectionality; experience working with Tribal communities, immigrant communities, and/or marginalized communities; understands issues of equity, inclusion and social justice.

Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
