General Summary StatementThe Sterilization Technician carries out the safe collection of used medical equipment and instrumentation followed by decontamination, sterilization, assembling and testing as required. The Sterilization technician is responsible for documentation, maintenance and distribution of medical supplies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities1.\tEmployee disassembles, cleans, inspects, prepares, assembles, sterilizes and dispenses surgical and procedure instrumentation and trays for the Operating Room, Delivery Room, nursing units, and all other ancillary departments, according to prescribed procedures and aseptic technique2.\tAssists in the process of providing customer departments with appropriate sterile supply inventory3.\tMaintains communication with customer departments regarding requests and delivery of sterile supplies4.\tDecontaminates, prepares, processes, and sterilizes surgical and procedure instrumentation, trays and sets for the Operating Room, Labor and Delivery Room, nursing care areas, and all other ancillary departments utilizing the established infection control guidelines and appropriate methodology and techniques5.\tOperates the instrumentation washers, ultra-sonic equipment, and sterilizers (steam, plasma) in the Sterile Processing Department6.\tResponsible for dispensing and delivery of sterilized instruments and trays to the customer units and areas7.\tAudits supplies and inventory levels and notifies the Lead Sterilization Technician/Clinical Manager when levels are low8.\tAssist in processing orders for supplies maintained from the Storeroom9.\tEmployee is responsible for the unpacking and stocking the supplies on the shelves and storage areasRole Development1.\tDevelops own knowledge via practice, observation, and attending continuing education programs.2.\tPromotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care.3.\tPromotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment.4.\tServes as a preceptor and mentor for new employees.5.\tAccepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of change.6.\tDemonstrates verbal and writing skills that are appropriate for healthcare communication. 7.\tAdheres to the Operating Room Dress Code.Department of Nursing and Organization Support1.\tAttends departmental in services. Attends outside conferences that enhance performance, knowledge and growth. 2.\tCommunicates support of organizational values and strategies.3.\tSupports the following organizational programs: SCIP , iCare Values, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils, and supports Magnet. Performs job duties in accordance with these standards.4.\tMaintains good attendance/lateness standards in accordance with Hospital policy.Departmental Support1.\tMaintains equipment in working order. Uses equipment appropriately, follows department policies for equipment and supply use, cleaning and maintenance.2.\tPerforms assigned duties to maintain unit in a state of survey readiness and maintain quality initiatives. For example, quality control measures, emergency equipment checks, department cleanliness, etc.3.\tAdheres to unit programs to support patient care such as maintaining a quiet environment and customer service, etc.4.\tAttends staff meetings on a regular basis.5.\tKeeps patient care area and work environment neat and organized.

Education Training and Experience\n•\tA high school diploma or the equivalent is required\n•\t1-2 years’ experience as Sterilization Technician preferred\n•\tKnowledge of basic computer skills required\n•\tAbility to successfully complete on the job training for CCH computer programs.\n•\tAbility to speak, read, write and understand English.\nLicensure/Certification \nCRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification through IAHCSMM is preferred at hire ; required after one year.\nWork Environment and Hazards\n•\tEmployee must possess the ability to lift varying weights of up to thirty pounds vertically from floor to waist level routinely daily. Continuous standing and walking all day.\n•\tEmployee must be able to visually read the sterilization equipment graphs, charts and print- outs. Requires visual acuity to perform inspection of instrumentation before and after cleaning. Requires visual acuity to determine sterilization indicators. Some exposure to CRTs. \n•\tEmployee must possess the ability to hear audible alarms and buzzer sounds to work with the equipment within the Sterile Processing Department. Must be able to hear verbal communication over the telephone and in the environment of running mechanical equipment.\n•\tEmployee is exposed to Steam and chemicals, cleaning detergents to decontaminate instrumentation. Continuous work with contaminated instrumentation with exposure to bio-hazardous material.\n \nWork Contact Group\nWork closely with OR and CS personnel, and Purchasing departments. Contact with supply vendors and their representatives.
