The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is located on the 4th floor of the Dulles building. The Courtyard PACU and North PACU each consists of nine post-operative beds. The South PACU is an 18 bed unit dedicated to the pre-operative care of all inpatient and outpatient surgeries. A dedicated group of critical care trained nurses staff all three units 24 hours a day. There are two nurses on-call from Saturday until the unit reopens with a full staff at 7 a.m. Monday. The nurses in the North and Courtyard PACUs provide care for the surgical patient in the immediate post-operative period. It functions as an intensive care or outpatient overflow unit as the need arises. It is not unusual to walk through the unit and observe patients from every surgical specialty. PACU patient flow is an important part of keeping the OR schedule running smoothly. After it has been determined that a PACU patient is recovered from anesthesia and free of surgical complications, the patients are transferred to their general care surgical beds, SICU beds or discharged to home.Several PACU nurses have been cross-trained to work in the South PACU, also known as the Patient Receiving Area. In this 18-bed unit, nurses prepare the patient for the OR by checking consents, placing IVs, drawing blood, doing EKGs, assisting anesthesiologists with the lining of the cardiac patients and calming nerves. This unit also functions as a post-operative overflow unit when the North and Courtyard PACUs are full. The Clinical Nurse II is an RN that practices as a full partner on the health care team and consistently demonstrates safe practice within the organizational professional practice model.
