Primary Job Function Responsible for providing optical testing and design support in the creation and the development of new medical device products (invasive and non-invasive). This is a hands-on engineering position, requiring the assembly, alignment and calibration of optical equipment in the laboratory. Sound understanding of the use of optical laboratory equipment is essential.

Core Job Responsibilities:

Plan the development and design of optical systems and associated tooling for alignment and calibration from concept to production Expertise in developing optical tests to verify performance requirements Expertise in flow cytometry or hematology is advantageous Proficient with development tools such as Zemax, LabView, Matlab, or similar, to support the testing of optical instrumentation Proficiency in the use of CAD systems, such as SolidWorks, is a plus Experienced in working in an FDA regulated environment, e.g. controlling designs in a formal change management system. Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development Proficiency in technical management of suppliers. Develops and applies metrics to supplier partners as needed. Excellent collaboration with internal and external suppliers and customers. Proficiency in technical project management—developing, documenting, and executing work streams in support of multiple projects. Works cross-functionally to provide technical support Proficient in communicating complex technical situations in an understandable way. Flexibility where changes in the business environment dictate changes in direction as we develop new technical solutions. Positive attitude and focus on achieving goals. Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality. Reports to Functional Manager on project status, risks and response plans Knowledge of fluidics engineering is advantageous Write and submit intellectual property (invention disclosures, patents). Responsible: for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

Planning/Organization: Plans and organizes non-routine tasks w/approval. Initiates or maintains work schedule. Establishes priorities of work assignments.

Decision Making/Impact: Exercises judgment in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolution. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in an Engineering or closely related discipline with five or more years progressive work experience.  Exceptions to the degree requirement at this level require approval of the appropriate level of Senior Management. Four to six years progressive work experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering – Optical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical, or similar: plus 5+ years of related work experience with a strong understanding of specified functional area, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

(Technical/Business Knowledge (Job Skills)) Understanding of Optical- and Opto-mechancial concepts is required. Structured product testing/validation is essential. Experience with Zemax is essential. Experience with Matlan, or Labview to develop bench testing of optical subsystems will be highly preferred. Experience with Solidworks or other 3D-CAD programs is a plus. Work will be performed in a controlled quality system environment. Medical Device experience highly preferred.

Cognitive Skills: Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Has a sound knowledge of various technical alternatives and their impact.

Demonstrated ability to develop complex products that meets cost, time and quality standards. Winning, can do attitude. Innovative, results oriented approach. Team oriented. Possesses advanced leadership skills.
