Senior Engineer, Mechanical (IPG/RC, Electro-mechanical)

Senior mechanical engineering position which uses multidisciplinary (electro-mechanical) engineering knowledge to design and develop next generation Implantable Electronic Systems. This individual will be responsible for planning, coordinating and executing design activities in support of the project goals and must be able to analyze and resolve technical design related issues using objective engineering principles. This position requires knowledge and compliance in the areas of product design, design history files, design controls, test methodologies, verification / validation procedures, and root cause analysis. This position may be a core team member while concurrently supporting other projects as an extended team member. The position will be a liaison with cross-functional & cross-divisional departments and must be able to manage multiple deliverables while prioritizing their activities. Candidate must be clear and concise in their review and creation of technical documentation, drawings, procedures and test methodology, while using objective evidence when reviewing test data. This position interacts within a cross functional environment and requires strong verbal and written communication skills. Position may require up to 15% travel.

Essential Functions:

  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design.
  • Conceive and build prototypes.
    Run empirical and experimental analysis.
  • Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community.
  • Support animal and bench testing and clinical evaluations.
  • Support design reviews and physician visits.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of project goals
  • Establish requirements and specifications and support DHF development and review.
  • Test method and model development
  • Identify and mitigate project risks
  • Maintains knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of SJM, FDA and ISO design controls
  • Mentor younger engineers in best practices and technology development

      Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott’s marketplace success:

      • 5+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience (preferably in the medical device industry)
      • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Electro-mechanical experience preferred.
      • Knowledge of medical device design controls and project management.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of sound design principles and practices.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of CAPA process and root cause investigation.
      • Knowledge of statistical techniques and design of experiments.
      • Experience with designing and testing medical devices.
      • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Pro-E).
      • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills required

        Your preferred qualifications and education:

        • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
        • Experience in polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion, reflow, bonding).
        • Experience in test method development.
        • Analytical design, Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability or similar tool set.
        • 21 CFR Part 820 or other medical device experience
        • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
        • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability preferred.
