is developing a major new platform and has established a start-up environment

within Berkeley to contribute to this major initiative.

Siemens Healthineers are currently

seeking a Physicist, Chemist, Biochemist

or Engineer to contribute to new platform development within their

Molecular Diagnostics Business. Contributions are expected at the individual

level. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Capable of integrating

requirements from the various stakeholders and have ability to balance the needs of cost, quality

and time-to-market.

**Position Overview**


scientist at least 5 years industrial experience developing chemistries to support sample

preparation and cell lysis. Candidate shall have a thorough understanding of

the chemistry of sample preparation, extraction, purification and manipulation

of nucleic acids from complex matrices such as stool, whole blood , FFPE and

sputum. Knowledge and experience with chaotropic salts and Ph control of

reactions, lysis and binding of nucleic acids to silica and biotinylated

surfaces. Should work with enzyme and

RT-PCR assay specialists to conceive, develop, and commercialize nucleic acid

extraction technologies compatible with downstream PCR amplification and quantitation.


- Physicist, chemist, scientist bioengineer,

biochemist or engineer- MS required.

- Experience with most commercially available cell lysis and nucleic acid extraction technologies such

based on attraction of nucleic acids to silica surfaces on magnetic beads and


- Experience conceiving of improved extraction technologies

not merely adapting or optimizing protocols. The candidate should have invention

scope that includes includes consideration of lysis and binding

chemistries and interaction of specially

engineered/synthesized surfaces and


- Experience developing appropriate coatings and surfaces to

facilitate nucleic acid attraction and release.

- Experience with purification and transport of colloids and

nucleic acids and extraction of nucleic acids from complex crude biological

sample backgrounds.

- Experience with DEP, and ultrasonic field simulation


- Familiarity with Fluorescence and/or Luminescence based

optical detection systems is a strong plus.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Self-driven and creative team player, with strong startup

mentality. Must have strong problem solving skills and be willing to learn on

the job.

- Desire to perform hands-on analysis and experimentation

Experience with enzymatic lysis desirable

Knowledge of chemistry and enzymology of inhibitors desirable

Familiarity with conjugation chemistry with beads is highly desirable

**AdditionalSkills Sought** .

The engineer

/scientist will support the development of detailed requirements, engineering

specifications, verification and validation , and supporting regulatory

submissions of these devices.

Participate in FMEA, worst case analysis and

verification/validation of product/design

Ability to understand scientific and

systems-level engineering questions and propose and deliver solutions.


Ability to work independently and in

project teams.

Excellent communication skills
