Abbott Point of Care (APOC) has a new opening for Principal Systems Engineer.-Imaging. This individual will be responsible to design and develop and maintain software (SW) system applications for complex image processing and analysis applications following quality regulations and business objectives.

Design and develop and test SW for image processing, image segmentation, data modeling, pattern recognition, machine learning applications including requirements gathering, risk analysis, design specification, SW framework and algorithm development, documentation and execution of SW/algorithm verification and validation.

Lead the system and algorithm performance optimization. Develop strategies in SW system and algorithm testing.

Represent product risk management activities including identifying risks, causes, and mitigations.

Provide customer support for investigation of special cases.

Provide support to other groups for project development.

Lead design reviews for products/projects of direct responsibility.

Minimum Job Requirements


  • PhD degree or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering or equivalent. A PhD in the above fields is preferred.


    • Minimum 7+ years of experience or a PhD with minimum of 4+ years in product development related to image processing/pattern recognition, machine learning, strong problem solving ability, strong analytical capabilities

      Domain Requirements

      • With hands-on experiences and developed/implemented product level algorithms/applications in at least two of the following fields
        • Image processing including image enhancement, image/object segmentation, feature extraction, feature selection, and object analysis/classification.
          • Pattern recognition/machine learning including supervised and unsupervised techniques, feature selection, classifier design/training/validation, classification assessment/exception handling.
            • Data modeling including statistical analysis, model fitting, error analysis, optimization clustering analysis.
              • Understanding the latest progress and development in deep learning is a plus.  
                • Experience in image enhancement/restoration is a plus
                  • Experience in cell or medical image processing is a plus

                    Programming requirements

                    • Daily work involves using a visual C++ framework to implement advanced algorithms and supporting functions. The candidate must be at advanced level in SW system design and development using OOD methodology; advanced level in C++ programming.
                      • With hands on experiences in quick prototyping of ideas for image processing/pattern recognition tasks.
                        • With hands on experiences in implementing product quality C++ codes from research prototypes including architectural design, software design for reliability, testability and high performances (speed) And familiar with tools for test coverage, performance profiling
                          • With hands on experience in multithread programming and debugging.
                            • With hands on experiences in evaluating/assessing performance of the image processing/pattern recognition algorithms used, understanding their limitations, and finding mitigations.
                              • With experiences in image processing/computer vision libraries such as Intel IPP library, OpenCV, and machine learning libraries.
                                • Working knowledge of software configuration management tools
                                  • Demonstrated Good Software Practices
                                    • Experiences in tools for quick prototyping such as Matlab, R, etc.

                                      General requirements

                                      • Take lead in providing a full solution (product quality implementation) to a problem in image processing/pattern recognition applications including algorithm research, implementation, performance evaluation/assessment, special case handling/mitigation, testing, and documentation.
                                        • Work independently in dipping into a large code base to find problems and conceive fixes and  validate the fixes
                                          • Work in a team to solve problems collectively and backup other team members’ work items.
                                            • With working experiences in a full-cycle product (software system) development.
                                              • Working knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations Good Manufacturing Practices, Quality System Regulations or other structured product development standards.
                                                • Experience in performing structured failure mode analysis or other engineering risk management process.
