As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will design and develop medical devices as well as support existing products. This role has frequent interaction with Manufacturing, Quality, Marketing, Regulatory Affairs and other key functions to achieve business deliverables. As a Principal Engineer, this role will be an individual contributor within Medtronic’s endoVenous business. Responsibilities include providing electrical engineering leadership for new product development and sustaining engineering, as well as performing testing and analysis on medical devices for improvement and cost reduction.

A Day in the Life:

•Lead electrical activities and strive for functional excellence in all aspects of daily work

•Define and develop tests and test methods to meet product requirement

•Provide electrical engineering skills to analyze, characterize, and debug new product designs

•Understand and utilize design controls, quality system regulations, and failure investigation processes and methodologies

•Develop test methods and interface with certified test houses to verify/certify to global regulatory standards including IEC60601, EN45502, FCC, ETSI, etc.

•Execute and coordinate materials selection, concept/design characterization, verification and validation plans

•Partner with software team to optimize design and resolve issues

•Act as a liaison with external suppliers to insure continuity of product supply by resolving supply and quality issues

•Ability to institute design changes based on internal and external customer feedback

•Compose engineering drawings, protocols and reports, as well as create presentations and spreadsheets of an analytical and interpretative nature

•Work with design team to determine root cause design issues, create test suites, and characterize and verify electrical and mechanical designs

•Understand and use engineering drawings with specifications and tolerances

•Perform job functions in accordance with applicable GMP, ISO standards, etc. including compliance with applicable FDA and international regulatory laws and standards

•Contribute to inventions, new designs and techniques regarded as advances in the medical and technical/scientific community

•Use advanced techniques to anticipate, identify and develop solutions or alternatives to a variety of common and uncommon problems having a range of complexity

•Provide training and guidance to less experienced team members


•Degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field with Electrical Engineering experience

•10+ years of Engineering experience

•New product development and hardware experience

•Understanding of medical device industry and competitor products

•Experience with test methods and interface with certified test houses to verify/certify to global regulatory standards including IEC60601, EN45502, FCC, ETSI, etc.

Nice to Have:

•Understanding of clinical and regulatory pathways, IP and internal processes

•In depth knowledge and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in related field of expertise to develop innovative approaches to work

•Effective written and verbal communication sharing information, status, needs, and issues with others to inform, gain input, and support decision-making

•Knowledge of manufacturing processes

•Proficient in Design FMECA and Design Verification and Validation activities

•Application of statistical and analytical methods such as DOE and capability analysis

•Project management and leadership experience

•Experience in medical device product development

•Experience with contract manufacturers
