Our community of skilled activist volunteers makes a difference for students, educators, parents and community leaders.  DiscoverE supports and is supported by a coalition of more than 100 industry and non-profit organizations.

At our core we are highly collaborative and about people; those we serve as well as our small staff team located in Alexandria, VA.

Outreach Coordinator

The Outreach Coordinator (new position) serves as the main administrator of volunteer outreach for a forthcoming IMAX movie about engineering (Dream Big w.t.). The coordinator will build, monitor, and report outcomes for a STEM volunteer network to be engaged in scores of communities for the purpose of advancing understanding of the engineering profession.

This position reports to the Director of Programs and collaborates closely with the DiscoverE team and external stakeholders as we support a community of volunteers. The right candidate will have experience in outreach as well as in volunteer motivation and support. This position requires a hands-on person who is proactive.

Main Responsibilities

1) Connect with local and national stakeholders

  • Serve as a point of contact with national partners including film producer MacGillivary Freeman Films (MFF), associations and corporations.
  • Work with MFF to connect with museums that have booked the film, engage them in outreach and connect them with local coalitions.

Identify and engage local partners to conduct outreach around the Dream Big film.

  • Assist 20 museums to host ‘Girls Night Out’ events, including: assisting with identifying local program partners, recruiting speakers, inviting women engineers and engineering students to events.
  • Help create the online microsite connected to the project outreach, including drafting language, reviewing wireframes and designs, and uploading content to the website.

2) Lead, support, and organize local campaigns and projects

  • Keep local coalitions and volunteers informed of program resources and opportunities for engagement.
  • Distribute tools and resources to local coalitions and determine what else they need.
  • Monitor progress of local coalitions and step in to help advance efforts where necessary.
  • Shape communications to/for local coalitions including best practices and program ideas.
  • Oversee mini-grant program for local coalitions, including developing the online application, reviewing the applications with the project partners, notifying the grantees and collecting reports at the end of their project.
  • Collect orders for the 52 Weeks of Engineering Kits and provide contact information to fulfillment partner.

 3) Collect data and report out

  • Report and document volunteer engagement, including photos.
  • Work with an evaluator consultant to collect information.

A typical day might include:

  • Working with the Web development team to ensure appropriate outreach content.
  • Developing and maintaining a project planning/communications calendar.
  • Assessing and making changes to a tactic that is not working.
  • Shaping communications to/for local coalitions.
  • Organizing and driving a teleconference to build or steward local partnerships as necessary for success.

Reviewing wireframes or uploading content to the campaign microsite.

We require:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Computer literacy and database familiarity.
  3. Experience in delivering volunteer-based programs, including marketing, a plus.
  4. Prior work in STEM outreach is a plus.
  5. Experience in developing local collaborations a plus.
