Join our research group Future of Automation located in Charlotte, NC, for 8 months internship, and investigate new methods to introduce automation in diverse application areas such as advanced manufacturing in smart factories, materials informatics, automation in process structure property linkages and robotics. Our close contact to different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial applications. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research. **What are my responsibilities?**







+ You will contribute to industrial research projects on process-structure-property linkages via machine learning for gas turbine and other alloys



+ You will collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in the fields of materials, automation, machine learning and optimization



+ You will implement concepts and solutions in prototypes.







**What skills are needed to qualify for this internship**







+ Profound knowledge of materials and microstructures and physical metallurgy



+ A current student pursuing a PhD degree in Materials Science or Mechanical engineering



+ Experience in microstructure image processing scripts for: multiphase segmentation, object analysis, etc. and Statistically quantify microstructures: n-point statistics, cord length distribution, pair correlation, etc.



+ Experience in developing PSP metamodels using dimensionality reduction (Principal Component Analysis) and regression techniques.



+ Good programming knowledge in MATLAB and C++, Python e.g. writing reusable code



+ Practical experience in materials characterization techniques, e.g., SEM, Metallography, microscopy, indentation techniques and familiarity with other mechanical testing methods



+ Domain knowledge in machine learning algorithms and techniques is preferred



+ Excellent team working and communication (verbal & written) skills in English



+ Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts.
