Human Factors Engineer (UI Design and Usability)

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber engineer for our Human Factors Systems Engineering team to plan and execute the usability engineering process for critically important products and product lines with the purpose of meeting divisional growth objectives.  As part of the Systems Engineering team, the HFE will work with project teams and end users to identify usability risks, create task workflows, user interface concepts, and detailed usability plans. This position requires independent judgment in the planning, organizing, and performing work and the application of usability principles to the evaluation and solution of complex product design problems.

  • Participates in research activities to gain understanding into user, patient, and environmental profiles
  • Provides input to customer, product, and software requirements
  • Creates use specifications, usability research plans, protocols, and reports
  • Creates detailed user interface design concepts
  • Participates in the risk management process and identifies or evaluates usability related risks, hazards, and  hazard-scenarios
  • Plans and performs user research activities and formative/summative usability testing including recruiting users, scheduling, and facilitating sessions
  • Performs activities with users in actual or simulated use environments such as cognitive walk-throughs, contextual analysis, or expert reviews
  • Works with cross-functional teams to provide user interface design, and/or workflow recommendations
  • Create usability engineering compliance and summary reports for regulatory submissions

    Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott’s marketplace success:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Factors Engineering or Interaction Design or related industry
    • Minimum of 3 years of work experience with the design of complex user interfaces
    • Requires in-depth knowledge and experience of human factors as well as cognitive psychology theory and applications; the software development process, software technology, and effective methods of working with R&D teams; customers, trends, and governmental factors
    • Advanced computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing, and specialized applications
    • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment
    • Ability to travel approximately 20%, including internationally.

      Preferred:

      • Medical Device Industry experience
      • In-depth knowledge of FDA’s guidance as well as international standards on the usability engineering process for medical devices
      • User interface design experience including labeling, software applications, icons, and graphics
